SPENDING $19,000 to fly mental health commissioners to and from their meetings is just plain crazy.
IN REFERENCE to a comment in Speak Out the other day that said referring to a Marine hero as an ex-Marine was incorrect, he is a former Marine. I beg to differ. Once a Marine, always a Marine.
I'VE BEEN thinking about two Speak Out comments. The people either didn't read all of the articles or maybe they were unable to comprehend what was stated. I did some reading on the subject of autism because I really thought about Rain Man II. But what I learned clearly showed that ABA is needed and is the only thing known to work. Obviously, the uninformed people who were against helping the children would rather they be institutionalized for a lifetime. Then it would take millions of dollars. It seems to me that a few thousands is a small amount if a child could be educated to be self-supporting. Teaching special education is required by law. Look it up. It costs the local schools nothing. Look that up. You know, if all parents cared about their children as much as that couple seems to, then maybe alcohol, drugs and crime wouldn't be so prevalent in the schools today.
ONCE AGAIN the integrity of Jefferson School and its staff is questioned because of the Wingo family's comments. The staff of Jefferson is maintaining it's professionalism by abiding by the rules of confidentiality. It's a shame that the community is only able to hear one side of the Wingo story. The Wingos ought to give Jefferson staff the same professional courtesy.
STOP WHINING. As a victim of violent crime, I realize that I am overpowered by a perpetrator with a gun or whatever the weapon. What makes me think that a gun would not be taken away from me? What makes you think that all the other objects used as weapons won't still be used? I was nearly killed by a screwdriver. So let's arm all of America with screwdrivers? I hardly think that's the answer.
THIS IS in support of the Heath families who are suing major media companies like Time Warner. It turns out that before that student started shooting his classmates over in Heath High School, he watched a movie over and over called "The Basketball Diaries." In that movie, the main character -- some would say the hero -- goes to school and shoots his classmates and some of his teachers. The student who did the shooting at Heath watched that movie and then tried to do the same thing. He emulated the movie as he was shooting his fellow students. It's a terrible thing. The person who did the shooting is responsible, but the movie also bears some responsibility. People who make money trying to get our society to do evil things should pay for their evil. Everybody involved should try not to encourage things like this.
I THINK that Cape Girardeau would be a much better-run city if Jim Drury would be the mayor.
I'M CALLING to voice my respect and appreciation for Coach Janet at Notre Dame High School in Cape Girardeau. He has continued to show dedication to the school throughout the years. Thanks, Coach, for being such a wonderful teacher. It doesn't go unnoticed.
I WOULD like to encourage everyone in Cape Girardeau who loves beautiful gardens to drive up Pacific Street at the north end to see the beautiful garden that the university maintains. It's a gorgeous site with the pergola and the tulips, the cherry trees and all the beautiful flowers.
WELL, I see it's random acts of kindness time again. I would love for my neighbor to take this to heart and start to practice kindness now and the rest of the summer. We are not young and are not in good health, but we cannot afford to have our yard work done for us. We clean up our walk and driveway after each cutting, and he does not. While it is his choice, what really upsets us is sometimes that day or the next or sometime even hours later, he will blow his grass all over our walk and drive and just leave it there for us to redo. He has been doing this 40 years, but it is getting increasingly harder for us to do. It's hard for us to get it all done once a week much less redo it because he makes a mess and leaves it. He is not the kind of man we can approach and say something to about this, so we hope he will see himself and stop this practice. Please, let's all be kind and think of our neighbors and respect what they do and not make their lives harder.
