Obey the law
THIS IS to all the disgruntled Proposition B supporters. This is why we didn't want you to have guns anyway. And if you're carrying, you're no longer law-abiding citizens.
City dwellers know about guns
I'M RESPONDING to the April 11 editorial which assumed incorrectly that the urban areas voted against Proposition B because they are not used to guns. I think it's far the opposite. I think that the people in the cities are more aware of the damage that guns can do. They live with crime every day much more than we do here, and they are wise in their assumption that more people do not need to be carrying guns. And to further support that statement.
War protesters are mum
THE ANTI-WAR protesters: What hypocrites. Now they don't want anyone to say anything because it will undermine the war effort. What a bunch bull. If it wouldn't have been for people like Joan Baez, Jane Fonda, the Clintons, the draft dodgers leaving the country, the Vietnam War would have been over quickly. On asking North Vietnam officials why they kept fighting, they said it was because of the protesters in America. We knew if we held out, we could win. The only reason they don't demonstrate against this war is because we have a liberal draft dodger for president.
Make it mandatory
THOSE WHO favored Proposition B still don't get it. They are blinded to the truth as to why the proposal lost. Carrying concealed weapons would have passed easily if the playing field had been leveled. In other words, if Missourians could have had more assurance that everyone was armed, this would have garnered the number of votes necessary to pass the proposal. To a large degree this could have been accomplished if carrying concealed weapons would have been made mandatory.
Tax everything else too
IN RESPONSE to all the commotion over Jim Drury and the Cape Girardeau lawsuit, why should visitors who purchase motel rooms in the Cape Girardeau area foot the bills for the SEMO University through higher motel taxes? Why should Drury and all the other effected lodging businesses be responsible for not only collecting the tax but hearing their customers complain and stay elsewhere because Cape Girardeau's tax rate makes local lodging establishments non-price competitive when bidding on conventions to the area. Yes, Drury and all motels benefit from revenue created when the university has an event, and motel rooms are purchased by university patrons. But motels are not the only businesses that benefit from university events. Why not tax food, cars, liquor establishments, ballgame tickets, gas and university parking? This money could then be used to pay for the university expansions for the River Campus. Or maybe people are tired of taxes. Why doesn't the university pay it's own bills? By the way, I'm thinking of purchasing a new vehicle. I think I'll purchase it in another town where the tax rates are lower. It could save me a fortune. Maybe next time my business has an event and I need motel rooms, we can stay in Jackson. It would be cheaper. Not as much taxes.

Cartoon was in poor taste
I THINK your editorial cartoon the April 12 Missourian was in very, very poor taste.
City: Join cleanup week
WITH THE city urging all of us to clean up our property for cleanup week, it would be a good time for them to get rid of that awful pile of trash on Lombardo Street that was left over from the drainage project.
Thankful for leadership
I'M SO glad and thankful that we have a president like President Clinton. If we had had leadership like that we could have stopped Hitler in his tracks, Stalin before he started, and Mao before he overran China. There will be many stars in this man's crown for all the souls that he's saved in Yugoslavia.
Speed bumps a bad idea
I'D LIKE to reply to the comment of a reader who suggested we put speed bumps on the bridge over the Mississippi River. I'm not an engineer, but I am employed in a technical field here in Cape Girardeau. The way I see it, every time a car drives over a speed bump, it would cause a concussion, much like a hammer striking the bridge. So even cars traveling at the speed limit hitting these speed bumps would cause these concussions or hammer blows to the bridge structure. And, of course, the faster the car is going, the greater the impact to the bridge. Therefore, if we put speed bumps on the bridge, that would put the thing in the water faster than just leaving it alone altogether. So before anyone jumps on this bandwagon, think about that logic for a while. Maybe there's somebody out there who is an engineer who might be able to confirm what I'm saying. It's an absolutely awful idea for an aging bridge. We'll be lucky to keep it together until the new one's built as it is.
