Road closing affects school schedule

I SAW where they are closing the bridge over the Big Muddy River between Wolf Lake and Grand Tower in Illinois, and it's going to be closed for several days. Our school district lost three days of educating our students last year because of the way they scheduled these days. Now, I'm wondering if we're going to have to lose two more school days, because school starts when the bridge is going to be closed. They had all summer, and now they're going to close the bridge down when we're ready to go back to school. I think it's about time the construction company bend and make arrangements so that our kids can be in school so they can learn.

Thanks for help with stalled car

I'D LIKE to say thanks to the man who helped me and my niece when we were stuck on Kingshighway and Independence. He pushed our car out of the street and tried to jump the battery. I don't know who you are, but I appreciate it very much. There are very good people in Cape Girardeau. Thank you.

Try dog on a leash and see how it works

REGARDING THE Missourian's article on dog bites: I think the postmaster could provide a good opportunity to encourage people to keep their dogs on leashes. He could be the first one to try that and see how well that works.

Can't find people to do repair work

I WAS wondering what has happened to the work ethic of America? I've tried for over six months to get some minor things done around my home. I've tried to get local carpenters to work around my house to no avail. I can't get anyone to come. Within the last three months I've tried to get someone to come work on my TV antenna, and no one will return my phone call. Please tell me what has happened to America's work ethic.

Leave interstate to highway patrol

WHEN I went to work this morning, I was driving down I-55 and saw three Cape Girardeau police cars out on the highway. I feel like they were out there trying to get speeders. I think at 6:30 in the morning, they're more needed in the city of Cape where there's crime inside the city limits, not on the interstate where the highway patrol takes care of that jurisdiction. I know the city limits are posted on the interstate, and I don't feel like the city police have any business on our interstates. They're city police officers, not highway patrolmen.

Get the facts on Reagan, Bush, Quayle

TO THE people who are trying to bend the facts about the increase in the national debt at the time when Reagan, Bush and Quayle were president and vice president, I would like to say that I got my facts from the 1999 World Almanac. Up until the start of the Reagan-Bush fiscal fiasco, there was never such stupid action no matter which party controlled the White House and Congress. Don't just buy the weasel speech of Reagan-Bush apologists. Check the facts in an accepted source of information, and you'll then understand what Reagan, Bush and Quayle did to our grandchildren and why I don't want any Bush or Quayle back in the White House.

In defense of pool activities

I WAS one of the adults at Capaha pool that day a caller said there was unruly behavior. Those kids were playing there because they were part of a day care and had to stay with us, the adults. There are no rules that say you can't splash and bounce a ball. The kids were just having fun. And the lifeguard was not reading a magazine. She had it in her lap.

Lot of water is being wasted

I RECYCLE. And when they told us to conserve water, I did. But when I saw the person who complained in Speak Out of his neighbors' washing their cars, I had to laugh. Where does the water come from for all the new construction and there's no one living there? Do you know how much water is wasted at the federal building? I think someone needs to investigate.

Any thought of supporting Bush is dashed

ALL THOUGHTS I might have previously entertained of voting for George Bush were dashed when I read the headline which vividly pointed out that before being able to address the area, he had to have an audience with Rush and kiss the ring of America's No. 1 Hatemonger. On the other hand, I recognize this will probably enhance his popularity in this area, given the mentality of the local populace. Or, as the case may be, lack of it.

Train should have been shut down long ago

THANK YOU, Mr. Goza, for speaking out against the Jackson railroad. That stinking, smoking, soot-throwing thing should have been shut down long ago. It's not only the people who live in that area who get the smoke and pollution. People get that black junk miles away. Probably some of those stockholders complained about the smoke too. I'd rather have cigarette smoke in my lungs than that black junk. No one but the stockholders profit from that train. I think most of them won't go on welfare if it shuts down. Even the Whistle Stop Restaurant shut down. The train isn't bringing any money into Jackson.

Rush only had praise for JFK Jr.

I OCCASIONALLY listen to Rush Limbaugh and find he has a great wit and knowledge of current events and politics. I do not agree with him 100 percent all the time for his comments or views, but I have enough to sense to know when he's obviously joking. As far as JFK Jr. goes, I only heard praise for him. If one hates Rush Limbaugh, he shouldn't listen to him or accept hearsay from hatemongers. I can see why a liberal would find him unbearable, because most can't cope with the truth and decency.

Contrasts in Bush and Gore

I WATCHED Al Gore talk of how the Republicans want to starve children, throw people out in the street and poison the water and the air. It's like he's talking to fools such as he seems to be. Of course, many will not just take his word for this, but not even question. The truth is, all the programs were increased under Republican proposals. The scare-tactics of this creep is shameful. Hours later I watched Mr. Bush on a campaign trail. What a difference. A man who sees God as a source of strength for our country, who talks of decency, responsibility and compassion. Mr. Bush is stirring the emotions of pride and love for a decent America. Mr. Gore is stirring the pot of division, blame, envy and hate.

Animals are entitled to living homes

I WANT to say God bless the Scott City police and the humane society for rescuing the horses, dog and cat from the owners who had abused them. I don't think some human beings will ever understand that animals have feelings and want to be loved and taken care of, too. I hope and pray that legal action will be taken against these people and the animals are placed in loving homes.

Cosmic justice or just coincidence?

MY, MY, my. How interesting things have been lately. Utah, one of the self-imposed capitals of morality in the world and the home of one of the world's most restrictive religions, has been free of disasters for several centuries. Then they bribe their way into the Winter Olympics and get caught, and then a tornado rips through their capital city. Cosmic justice or simple coincidence? As Time-Life says, "Read the book."

It takes one to support one

A SPEAK Out caller with an attempt at humor in support for his president and explaining "pervert" said, "It takes one to know one." My friend, it takes one to support and vote for one. When you accept his perversion as not important to your children or family to have decent values, you fit the definition of a pervert also, with poor moral judgment and character.

Look at George W. Bush's pot record

I WOULD suggest that any supporters of George W. Bush look to see what he has said on the record on whether he has ever smoked pot. I'm just curious if you are aware of what he claims, because you callers frequently refer to our president as a pot-smoking president. Maybe you should look at Bush's record of what he said he did while he was in college.
