THOSE TWO punks who shot up the school in Colorado are getting just exactly what they wanted. You cannot turn the television on without seeing these boys' pictures. These boys stated in a note that they wanted to go out in a flame of glory. Repeating this day after day after day and all these special programs are exactly what these boys wanted. They wanted their pictures shown on television day after day, and the news media is falling for it. Even our own local news media is no better off than what they others are. They show it every day too.
THERE ARE no street lights in one area off of Bloomfield Road with nothing but retired couples and widows. Yet the city cannot afford one street light. Use some of the motel tax money for that project instead of for a state college project. We pay our taxes too.
IF YOU want to look at the real answer to the problem of the moral decline in America, look at Bill Clinton. For six years now, he's led this country by lies, deception, perjury and failure to enforce the laws that he swore to do as part of his oath of office. He's taught the country, including the youth of this country, to do whatever you want. If you don't get caught, it's OK. If you do get caught, all you have to do is lie. The moral leadership or lack of moral leadership out of the White House is the big reason this country is seeing so many failures in our moral standards. The Democrats, who had their chance along with other senators to remove this man from office and take away the blot that he's made on the record of the office, failed. They took lockstep marching orders from their man, Bill Clinton, and did not use any kind of judgment and character. They kept their man in office, and now the country's still paying the price of having this man in the White House. In addition to the terrible failures in moral leadership and domestic matters and world matters, now we're involved in a civil war in a country that's so far from us there's no possible threat to our national interests. This is just another case of Bill Clinton wagging the dog.
I'M CALLING in response to the caller who said the Colorado shooting was a result of the liberal government that we have now in the United States. I would ask that this caller to take a look at the government of Switzerland and the Netherlands where the government is very liberal, the people very happy and the murder rate is zero.
I AM sitting in my bedroom trying to relax, but unfortunately I have listen to my neighbor's music. I have tried to talk to him personally. As a last resort, because of sleepless nights because of their music, I have called the police. One of the officers even asked if the neighbors were black. Yes, they are, and if you call the police, the police say we don't want them here because of their color. If they would just obey the law like the rest of us, I would not have a problem. I believe I am being discriminated against because I am white.
I'M SO disappointed to hear that my friend, Jo Ann Emerson, is for stepping up the war in Kosovo. She means well, and she's right. If we're going to have a war, we ought to go and win. But we don't belong in Kosovo or Yugoslavia. They've been fighting there for several hundred years. Even if we won, they'd still start fighting the minute we left. We'd be stuck there trying to enforce a peace on people who don't want peace. We don't belong there. We should get out. Jo Ann, I hope you see that, and I hope you vote to get us out.
I'M CALLING in response to the person cutting down our military troops. Shame on you. My son happens to be in the military, and I'm so very proud of him and all the other people serving our country. I don't want him to go to war or go to Kosovo, but he's trained and ready to go if he needs to. As for you, it's not our military personnel who are dumb. It's ignorant people such as yourself. I'm personally glad you're not in the service. You don't have the right stuff it takes to wear our uniform.
I READ Speak Out each morning, and most of it is so negative that I feel like reporting something positive this morning. I want to compliment the people who came to my garage sale in Cape. When I incorrectly totaled a few sales, the people caught it and gave me more money. I had a box of free items in the driveway, and a few people actually came up to me and said they felt bad about taking these items and insisted on paying me a little something for them. Most people were very polite and friendly, and very few tried to buy items for less than my sticker price. We don't have to look far to find nice, honest people, because many of them are living right here in Cape. Random acts of kindness happen every day, but most go unnoticed and unreported. Way to go, Cape Girardeau.
IT WAS touching to see Al Gore at the memorial for the tragic loss in Colorado. However, where was his concern or even the secretary of defense or president's concern for the seven servicemen who were lost at Fort Campbell, Ky.? It seems they did not care about the military people, because I guess it would not bring them any political gain.
JUST AS they did at the Audubon meeting, chip-mill spin doctors are constantly trying public deception. They do not take only beat-up oak trees as claimed, but they do regularly cause several-hundred-acre clearcuts to be produced. These are items that reputable foresters will tell you are tree mining, not forest management. The trip five minutes south of Cape to the chip-mill site at the Southeast Missouri Regional Port will reveal a mountain of straight, small logs waiting their date with the shredder. There are no beat-up oak trees to be seen anywhere. High-capacity chip mills do not promote responsible forest management. They promote forest liquidation. We cannot afford them in southern Missouri.
I'D JUST like to say that when comparing the Cape multipurpose building to the Perryville multipurpose building, Perryville went all the way to make sure the entire city was taken into account by adding the library, the auditorium, orchestra pit and child-care service. When are we going to learn? Let's do it right or don't do it.
I'VE BEEN looking at the Speak Out column. Some of these are the same venom that has appeared in some of the letters related to what's happening to our children in the schools. People say, How can children show so much hate? Yet I read and hear constantly, as do you, the hate in so many adult voices when they disagree. It doesn't matter which side you're on. If there's hate because you disagree, it multiplies and spreads over to our children. I'm of the generation that watched my older friends die in World War II. Then my generation went to Korean War. The next generation went to the Vietnam. God help us. Are we going to lose my grandchildren's generation to children who hate? If you don't agree with me, don't hate me. Pray for me. Let's get back to loving each other.
THIS IS one time I think Bill Clinton should have been listened to. He was right about school uniforms, which is a very good idea because of the brand names of shoes and all the clothing that kids wear. At Littleton High School in Colorado, the boys with the long, black trench coats carried in all of those things that blew up the school. If the school had uniforms, school officials could have done what Clinton wanted to do a long time ago and make them leave off the trench coats. Nothing like this would have ever happened. Now we're headed for trouble, I'm sure.
BEFORE YOU allow your children to watch "Noah's Ark" tonight and Monday, please be aware that it is not based on biblical facts. It is a distortion of God's word. It contains biblical inaccuracies, graphic violence and sexual overtones.
I WANT to comment on some of the things I read in Speak Out about guns. When are you people going to open your eyes and realize that the only people in all these school shootings who had guns were the criminals? If that teacher in Colorado who got killed could have had a gun, he and others might still be alive today. Wake up, people. With present laws, only criminals have guns. We need our Second Amendment back.
I WAS proud to see President Clinton at our 50th anniversary of NATO. Where was he for the memorial service for the seven troops in special forces that are part of the NATO operation who died at Fort Campbell, Ky.?
THE MAN who said we should stand behind our president must remember Mr. Clinton didn't stand behind his president. He went to another country and protested against this country. I stand behind our men in service, but I can't stand behind an adulterer and liar who talks of morals and values in our country.
A COUPLE of weeks ago, I was disgusted with the Cape Girardeau school system for not doing what it's paid to do, supplying the need of all children. Example: Elijah Wingo. Now, on KFVS, I also see where the district refused to help another child who is showing extremely troubling behavior. Instead, he was suspended for six weeks. Why is this school system in existence? What is its purpose? Kids are kids. They are our future and our responsibility. Every kid, no matter what circumstances, deserves the best we can give. It does not take a parent or a set of parents to raise a child. It takes a community. Let's quit worrying about stepping on toes and do what's best for our children and for our future. How many others has the school system turned its back on? Wake up. Cape Girardeau public schools. Get it together. Don't just worry about yourself. Worry about your community. That's why you're there. Not one child should be allowed to fall through the cracks.
I'M CALLING Speak Out concerning the picture on the front page of Tuesday's paper. We hear so much about news media on TV and kids copying these things. What about a three-year-old climbing on a bookshelf? What kind of a message does that send to kids who look at the paper? First, he should not be climbing on the shelf. And what about stepping on the books? No wonder kids grow up not respecting anything.
IF THEY don't quit cutting down all the trees out there at the Jaycee Municipal Golf Course, it's going to be looking a little naked. What they ought to be doing is plant some more trees.
