IF GARY Rust wants us to read that right-wing clap trap, just let us read it someplace else. Don't let him put all that garbage in from Gary Bauer and Forbes and all the rest of them. Do you realize a few years ago there was a Republican candidate for president who the following year was so fed up with the Republican Party that he went to Franklin Roosevelt and wanted to form a new party. That was Wendell Willkie. He was so fed up that he couldn't stand right-wingers. Come on, get with the world.

Advice for dealing with backbiting town

I'D JUST to comment on a comment in Speak Out from the person who said he had never lived in such a backbiting, hypocritical town in all their life as Cape Girardeau. I'll go along with that to a certain extent. People do talk a lot, and they spread a lot of rumors and everything. I know from experience, because if all the things that had been told on me were true, I'd be so far under the ground that nobody could dig me out. One thing I will say for Cape Girardeau and the surrounding area: When you really get down and you really need help, these people will come to the front. Maybe this person, instead of calling Speak Out and criticizing these people, should take a more Christian attitude and not listen to the gossip and the backbiting and also talk to these people and try to explain to them.

If she didn't lie, why immunity?

IF MONICA Lewinsky did not lie about having sex with President Clinton, why is her lawyer trying to get her immunity? She did lie. People, use your brain, not your political view.

IN RESPONSE to the Speak Out person who called in "A town of backbiting hypocrites," I'd like to point out a couple things about Christianity. Even though Christians are supposed to show compassion, we are not supposed to be tolerant. We are supposed to vigilante to the Christian way of life. And the benefit of a doubt is not a Christian concept, that's a democratic concept. In the eyes of Christianity and in the eyes of God, we are all guilty until we confess our sins before Jesus Christ and ask for his forgiveness.
