How many wore "We Card" signs? DURING RECENT attempts by local police to have teen-agers purchase tobacco and alcohol in Cape Girardeau to help crack down on such sales to underage minors, did anyone count the number of "We Card" signs worn by the salespersons or displayed in the stores? It would be interesting to see if those stores who say "We Card" really do. That program is sponsored by people who sell tobacco, and I wonder if they are really trying their best to reduce sales to minors...

How much of a wit does a poem take?

A SPEAK Out caller recently said it doesn't take wit to write a poem. My four-line response is entitled "Half a loaf."

In order to pen poetry,

It doesn't take a full-fledged wit.

But will the caller agree with me,

It at least takes half of it?

I WAS reading Speak Out about how Broadway work should get priority. I agree with the caller. It should get priority. The only reason the city is fixing Perryville Road is so it can annex further north and take our property into the city limits.

Clinton is an outstanding president

I ENJOYED Tom Eagleton's commentary in Sunday's newspaper. I'm surprised the Southeast Missourian printed this one. Clinton is our leader, and I think he's an outstanding, smart president.

Old buildings worse than an eyesore

IF THE old St. Francis Hospital and the old Marquette Hotel would have been out near I-55, the city would have condemned these buildings years ago. This city is way, way behind helping out the regular citizen. Tear them all down. They're worse than an eyesore.

Don't bomb without a good reason

I THINK it's a disgrace for our country to go and bomb another country for no reason. Iraq is not bothering or threatening anyone as of now that I can see. Clinton wants the attention diverted to something other than his sex mess he's in. Please, everyone pray for our country. It could be the end of it.
