Nutritionist concerned about Atkins diet

AS A nutritionist, I am calling to express my concern about the Atkins diet or other high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets. I have spent much of my life reading and studying the effects of diet on our health and want to share the following. Such high-protein and high-fat diets can indeed help you lose weight by shifting your metabolic processes. They can even result in better cholesterol and lipid levels, although I would contend that's probably due to the weight loss, not the specific diet. All research indicates, however, that such a diet greatly increases your risk of cancer, stroke, kidney disease, arthritis and osteoporosis, and it decreases your immune system in general. There are also all of the recent studies that have been done about aging of cells and aging of the body that are accelerated by this kind of intake. I have personally noticed that individuals who've been on these diets look older, and they don't have a healthy glow to their skin even after they have lost weight and stabilized. So my recommendation is that if you want to combat diseases and fight aging, listen to what your mom told you and eat your fruits and vegetables and whole grains, and you'll even lose weight in the process.

Why is Clinton giving our money away?

I WANT to comment about this trip that Clinton made over to Africa. He's offering hundreds of millions of dollars to the African dictatorships. Most of them shot their way into power, and they brutalized their people. And he's giving them all this money. He fights tooth and nail if the average person in this country gets a chance for a tax cut. He's against tax cuts, but he wants to give it away to these foreign countries. Another thing, how come we give them all of these hundreds of millions of dollars when our Social Security and Medicare programs are almost broke?

Tired of apologies for past misdeeds

I AM sick of the people in this country being expected to apologize for something somebody else did over 125 years ago. If there's even one former slave still alive today, let it be known that I personally am more than happy to say, "I am so sorry somebody else did that to you, but I personally owe you nothing."

A rapid decline of morals

A KUDO to Benjamin Lewis, local attorney, for his recent article on the Opinion page of the Southeast Missourian on a New Jersey court of appeals allowing lesbians and homosexuals to serve as Boy Scout and Girl Scout leaders. He thoroughly dissected the 2-1 decision of this court. Our country is plagued with a rapid decline of morals. We don't need this negative push from men and women interpreting the law. With people like Mr. Lewis on the judicial bench, such warped ruling would not surface.

Husband spoils wife out of love

IN RESPONDING to the woman who called about working women being spoiled, I'm not going to try and change your opinion or perception about women who work outside the home. All I know is that I am a working woman who teaches school. I rarely make contact with a chair. I do come home tired, and many times I wish I had two of me. My husband does spoil me because he wants to. He does it out of love and appreciation. I'm sure there are some people as those you described, but that's not everyone. I hope in your next 47 years of marriage that you get a little spoiling. You sound as though you deserve it. Good luck.

School paper keeps alum up to date

I JUST want to say thanks for including the Cape Central High School Tiger newspaper in the Missourian. I graduated from Central in 1939, but I still enjoy reading about what's going on.

City needs to take care of what it has

HEAVENS, I don't think the city needs to annex any more. I certainly feel for the gentleman calling in about the city wanting to expand. People move out in the country because they want to be away from city ordinances. They want to be free from city control. I don't think the city of Cape needs anything more. Let them take care of what already have. I think they've taken in too much.

Only God can give forgiveness

ALL RIGHT, people, let's get this straight. I don't give a rat's rear end whether Billy Graham or Sam Shepard or Mickey Mouse forgives Bill Clinton. If you're talking about religious forgiveness, the only person who can forgive is God. There isn't a man on the earth who's going to know whether Bill Clinton has asked for forgiveness. So to sit here and speculate about whether or not he should be forgiven because of the Bible or whether Billy Graham says he should is a moot point. The Bible does say that man should not judge another man. So there you have it.

Technology and the Postal Service

BACK IN the good old days when postage was 6 to 12 cents, it wasn't any problem getting mail from St. Louis on the train in one to three days. Now at 32 cents, and with all the super-type equipment and fast delivery service it takes three to six days. Hurrah for high technology.

Let noisy children eat their lunches

JACKSON BOARD members, you'd better check your schools. The West Lane School has this red, yellow and green light going. If the kids make noise and they have just start eating their dinner, they throw it away and make the kids do without dinner. People have to work to pay for these kids' dinners. What's wrong that they're not letting them go ahead and eat? These red lights and green lights, that's all right, but people pay for their children's lunch.

Accused shooter knew what he was doing

ANDREW GOLDEN may be a child, but last year he went deer hunting with his father and grandfather and shot and killed a deer. He knew what he was doing when he planned the attack on his schoolmates in Jonesboro. He's not an innocent little child.

Teaching isn't easier than nursing

THIS IS in response to the nurse who thinks teaching is such a good occupation. If teaching sounds so good to her, how come she's not one of the school nurses who gets the holidays and weekends off? That might be because they make about a third of what nurses in hospitals make. And if her life is so bad, maybe she should try the teaching. It's not easy.

Pay teachers what nurses get

TEACHERS DESERVE wages that at least compare to that of nurses.

Cape area wage scale is behind the times

I'M DOWN from South County visiting a friend of mine in Jackson who works with me in a factory in St. Louis and commutes each day. We were looking through your Sunday paper and discussing the cost of living. We both agreed that your cost of living here in Cape County is about the same as South County. What really sparked our interest was the job openings in your paper. How in God's name can anybody in this day and age exist on $7 or $8 an hour? I have no college education at all. I'm a machine operator with nine years experience, and I earn $17 per hour. And that's nonunion. Come on people, it's 1998, not 1973. Your wage scale is 25 years behind the rest of the civilized world.

Teaching sounds good to this nurse

I TOO am a nurse. I have a four-year college degree, and all I can say to this other nurse who wrote "Nurse thinks teaching sounds pretty good" is amen.

Keep dogs off the soccer fields

THIS IS in regards to the Shawnee Soccer Park, especially those of you who think it's a dog's playground. It is not. It is designed and made and maintained for soccer players, not dogs. So please keep your dogs at home, because it is very disgusting to look at the piles of dog stuff that on the fields. If you think your dog is that important, please take him out to the Holiday Inn, rent him a room, order him a T-bone steak and then come back and get them if you value his life more than you do your kids.

President deserves the respect he gets

I'M SO proud that we have a Jackson High School student who respects our president. How many young people do? I think it's great, and I hope God blesses him in school and in his work. There is another at Leopold who respects our president. I think it's a shame how they do our people. The president is doing a real good job. There is more money in people's pocket today than there ever has been. And I think it's time that we look at the good that he's done.

Republicans trying to save Social Security

HOORAY FOR Rep. Heckemeyer and his Democratic colleagues and the points they scored with frightened senior citizens through their letter to the editor. They told us how they oppose the privatization of Social Security. Unfortunately they forgot to be honest and tell us that just like Medicare, Social Security is ultimately going to run out of paying workers to support it and out of money. It will die. The country of Chile has gradually privatized their equivalent of Social Security and is achieving excellent results. As a baby boomer I am thankful for the Missouri Republicans who had the vision and the courage to try to give me an alternative to the economy rathole known as Social Security.
