I UNDERSTAND from an article in the Missourian that the Missouri Department of Transportation is concerned because of all the traffic between Scott City and Cape Girardeau. I believe they stated that the interstate was never meant to be used for commuter traffic. I have two words for those people: St. Louis. All the highways in St. Louis are used for commuter traffic. If you've ever been there at 8 o'clock in the morning or 5 o'clock at night, you know what I mean. Even if there is another way out of Scott City, unless the speed limit is 65 or 70 mph, people are not going to take it. They'll still be on the highways. Think about that before you build an expensive road that no one will use.
PETER KINDER and the other rebel rednecks want to have everyone running around with guns in their pockets. I think it's about time that we pass the law that California has. They have the new 10-20-life. Ten years if you pull out a gun in committing a crime, 20 years if you shoot at anybody and life if you hit somebody. I think it's the proper way. Get these gun carriers out of town.
OH TO be a youth today in our morally neutral society. Just think of all the things I did and the trouble I got into. Today I would be blameless. Everyone would blame it on my parents. Come to think of it, it wouldn't be bad to be an irresponsible adult either. Look at all the benefits they have today that older adults didn't have. Like no-fault divorce. No one's to blame. The kids just don't have both parents to blame for what they do. But to be a business owner would have to be the new high in irresponsibility. Today they can irresponsibly promote immorality in the world and in every area of public life, influence our kids to be irresponsible, promote lawlessness and even lie to millions of people about the lack of evidence that our product is harmful. Today, we say no one is to blame except the parents. Boy, oh boy, to be young and irresponsible again.
WATCH OUT for careless drivers. Twice in this month it has happened to me. Once on Independence a car suddenly backed up about 10 feet and changed lanes. Today, in a parking lot a woman in a car cut through. Luckily, it didn't result in accidents. I wish the police would start ticketing careless drivers. All that I've had is two spilled drinks on my floorboard.
I HEARD that they have found Native American bodies over in Thebes, Ill., and that they are digging these bodies up and putting them on exhibit. I was just wondering: Is there anybody out there who would mind me digging up their grandmother or grandfather and letting me put them on exhibit? I think that would be really neat.
I'M CALLING in response to the person who called about stepping in the dog's mess when she got out of her car. I have a neighbor who has two inside dogs, one big and one little. They let them outside and tie the big one up and let the little run loose. The little one comes over in our yard and does it's job, and they don't do anything about it until they see one of us come outside. Then they come and get their dog. I think that's rude and irresponsible. If you're going to have pets, you need to keep them on your property and keep a leash on them. That's the most simple thing to do if you're going to be a pet owner.
I WOULD like to make a comment on a couple of topics that various newspapers are publishing. One such topic is the economy. If the economy is doing so hot and is so ferocious, why is that so many people are having to get another full-time job just to make ends meet? Another topic: All these so-called women's clubs wanting to raise their children. Before they get out and decide they want to have fun, why don't they think about how they're going to raise these children?
THIS IS to the City Council of Cape Girardeau: Please wake up and condemn the old St. Francis Hospital and purchase it for back taxes. Get off your duff and do something about that. You can do it. Quit fibbing to the citizens. You can build a new police station there. It would be just perfect. Get rid of the old hospital and put a new police station there.
THIS IS to all the Clinton bashers. Can't the man do anything right? As I read in Speak Out, you haven't given him any credit at all, or for that matter, has this paper. But if you'll check your history, you'll see that he's done a fairly good job. And while you are in the history books, read about some of the escapades of the other presidents. Yes, your wonderful Republican presidents. If I were you, I would practice what I preach.
I THINK they should make old folks apartments out of old St. Francis Hospital and the Marquette Hotel. It would be the best thing that ever happened.
THIS IS in reply to the letter to the editor on the Opinion page where it says the Drurys have given much to the city. It will be a sad day when people get preferential treatment because they have money in this town. There are other people who have gone to the City Council for special-use permits, and many have been denied. Why should the Drurys be any different?
OH, THOSE poor Drurys. If John Q. Public or Sally Everyday Person had done what the Drurys did on this building and defiantly added a floor to it, the City Council and the planning and zoning commission and the inspectors would have us dismantle the building piece by piece and start over. Should we just sit back and let the Drurys do what they want to do? I don't think so. Let's all go to the next meeting and voice our opinion. Money can't buy what the regulations say. You can't do it after the fact. The rules that apply for us average citizens should also apply for the millionaire elite.
I AM looking for a used truck to buy, so I checked Sunday's classified ads. Out of 23 truck ads, only one specified the color of the truck. Come on, people. Would you buy a pair of shoes without knowing the color? Do everyone a favor when placing an ad and state the color of the vehicle.
THANK YOU and my compliments to Hobby Lobby for the absolutely stunning, fantastic, full-page Easter ad they placed in Sunday's Southeast Missourian. It depicted a magnificent angel moving the rock from Christ's grave. It was just heartwarming to see this, because I have tired of seeing the bunnies and the ducks and the chocolate candy. I mean, this is getting to be utterly ridiculous. Easter is a religious holiday. Let's not forget that. Thank you, Hobby Lobby.
I'D LIKE to comment on the politicians who are going around the country talking about how to save Social Security. It's very simple to save Social Security: The government to take the money it has taken out of it and put it back in the Social Security fund where it belongs and keep its cotton-picking fingers off of Social Security. If legislation is passed allowing privatization, what about these older people living on Social Security now? This is all the income they have. I can't understand why, when something comes up to help the ordinary people of this country, it takes the politicians years to get something done, if they get it done then. But if it's something to give themselves a raise, then they can pass it in two weeks time. It's time to get off your duffs and save Social Security and save it now. Put the money back in it that you've taken out.
I WAS reading in the paper where President Clinton took communion in a Catholic church. Can you tell me what is so wrong with that? That was Holy Thursday. Were all 12 disciples Catholics? It doesn't say so in the Bible. I don't understand what is so wrong. If somebody can explain it, I'd like to know, because at our church a lot of folks take communion. They're supposed to be all Catholics, but I know some of them aren't.
I AM calling in regards to Coach Shumate. I think it is absolutely pathetic that the university has even been part of this sort of a witch hunt, because I know for a fact that many of the coaches up there were actively involved in many of the same minor violations that Coach Shumate has been found guilty of. Shame on the university, because Coach Shumate did a wonderful job for many, many, many years. For them to be pointing the finger so that they don't get in trouble, I think it is absolutely inexcusable.
KUDOS TO student Brandon Howell and staff writer Tamara Zellars Buck for speaking out on negligent registered voters. If you did not use your freedom to vote on any of the issues presented, you have no right to complain. You made your choice, so live with the results of your decision.
I'D JUST like to comment about the Trinity Singers at Trinity Lutheran Church for the Easter service. They just sang beautifully.
IN REGARDS to the comment about turning the old bridge into a walking park, I think it's a wonderful idea, and I wish I had thought of it myself.
I THINK that Greenberg's commentary Monday was absolutely heinous, insipid and relatively insulting. To say that a person is not allowed to choose whether he wishes to end his suffering and saying it should be regulated by the government is terrible, It's almost as thought- and mind-controlling as the idea of going the opposite way and giving the person the right to choose. You know, Native Americans knew it was OK for a person who is done with life and who is done celebrating life to joyfully end his life by going off by himself and taking it quietly where he wouldn't be hurt. That should be continued so a person doesn't have to suffer and it should be assisted medically because that way the person isn't going to be harmed and isn't going to do it incorrectly.
SATURDAY I took some out of town visitors to view the North County Park. We were all surprised and disappointed to find the museum closed. The sign said closed on Saturdays and Sundays. This is the time when working families and out-of-town visitors want to sightsee. I would think that there would be visiting hours on Saturday and close Monday.
I'D JUST like to make a comment about our president going to Africa and giving away all this money and then he goes to Chicago and finds out the roofs leak and the schools are falling apart. Then he turns around now and he's going to give some money over to Ireland. I don't understand this.
I WONDER what kind of message our president is sending our young people. He's trying to get them to quit smoking. Then there's a video camera of him puffing on a cigar and beating on a drum. I suppose now he'll try to tell us that the cigar was not lit and he didn't inhale it.
