I WOULD like to make a comment to some people who are calling and saying we've taken God out of the schools. Now we're getting ready to take God out of the courtroom. Maybe we need to take the blindfold off Miss Justice. It's just like the Titanic. What actually sunk it was when it was leaving the dock and the guy said, "God himself cannot sink this boat." That's what caused it to sink, and maybe that's what's happening to America. ...

Godlessness leads to ruination

I WOULD like to make a comment to some people who are calling and saying we've taken God out of the schools. Now we're getting ready to take God out of the courtroom. Maybe we need to take the blindfold off Miss Justice. It's just like the Titanic. What actually sunk it was when it was leaving the dock and the guy said, "God himself cannot sink this boat." That's what caused it to sink, and maybe that's what's happening to America. These people want to take the Bible and twist it to their own beliefs. In the end, when you're in front of your Judge and Maker, there won't be any closet to hide in. I can guarantee you that.

President not below the law either

TO THE person who said the president's a role model and it's wrong if for him to go to bed and it's our business if he does with another woman besides his wife: No. 1, these are all allegations against the president. No. 2, he admitted he had a one-night stand with Gennifer Flowers. He did not say he had a long relationship with her. It is nobody's business what he did before he was president of the United States. It's really nobody's business what he does on his own time. It's his wife's and God's business, not ours. All these are allegations against the man. There's no proof of any of it's true that they're accusing him of. We live in a country where he's innocent until proven guilty. Also, the president is not above the law, but he's not below the law either.

Quit making excuses on storm warnings

OUR CITY manager advised us to turn on the television to look for severe weather warnings. This might be a good idea if the cable didn't go out every time it stormed. Let's quit making excuses and get the tornado warning system up and working.

Politicians who abuse drugs, alcohol

A FEW years ago when my ex-wife was being treated for drug and alcohol addiction, I had occasion to speak to the psychiatrist who was in charge of the program for one of the large hospitals in Chicago. I'd like to tell you what he said about the general personality profile of an alcoholic. He said by and large the great majority of alcoholics and drugs addicts have an immature personality with feelings of omnipotence. In other words, all these drunks and addicts think they're God. And that is why I am so deathly afraid of these politicians who have been arrested lately for being drunk or for monkeying around with other drugs.

Get-rich-quick scheme

HOW TO get rich -- and I mean really rich? The people around the old river bridge should buy the bridge and renovate it into a walking-bicycle park. This would put them among the top richest people in the U.S.A. Or, better still, renovate the old Marquette Hotel. Then they would double-sure be at the top. The man who bought the old St. Francis Hospital will be a billionaire by the year 2002.

Gun-safety education is the key

THIS IS concerning the article on the California approach on guns. My grandfather had guns in his house, my father had guns in his and I have guns in mine. I have paid my fees to own a handgun and rifle for my house for hunting and protection. I teach handgun safety to boys and young men throughout the Bootheel. The answer is handgun safety and education. After all, the Constitution gives us the right to bear and have firearms. I am no redneck. I believe in the Constitution. Don't you?

SEMO football team at Special Olympics

I WAS calling to commend Coach Mumford and the Southeast Missouri State University football team for your presence at the 1998 Special Olympics. I was impressed by your interaction with the athletes. It's nice to see that involvement in the community from our university.

Candidates shouldn't bash president

SEN. BOND and Congresswoman Emerson, I would advise you, if I were a member of your party and if I were you, to stay away from bashing the president and wanting to get him. There's going to be a big backlash, because the people are fed up. They know you're out to get the president. It's all politics. You listen to Mr. Starr. He's going to cause your defeat.

Old highways need help too

I HAD to laugh when I read the term "tight bypasses" used in the article describing part of the proposed Highway 34 project. If anyone would like to see a tight bypass, let them drive out Highway 72 and cross the two Whitewater River bridges. No, I take that back. Let them drive across one of those bridges in the rain, at night and meet a semi on it. That, my friends, is a tight bypass. It's appalling to me to be spending millions on new highways when the old ones are in this condition.

Weather station avoids scare tactics

YOU KNOW, folks, almost all of us have cable, and on cable there's a real good weather station. That's all they do is give the weather. You get the facts, but you don't have to get all the scare tactics that the local stations give you.

Look at storm-warning options

MY FAMILY does not agree with the city manager, who thinks a storm warning system could be a hindrance. We live in tornado alley, and saving the lives our citizens should be a priority. If our city manager is worried about money and maintenance, we need to pursue the phone company's warning system of ringing with a distinctive ring all the telephones as a warning. That technology is reportedly now available, and this would certainly be better than the system we don't have now.

Excessive speed is killer

I JUST wanted to say I agree with the letter that was in the paper concerning the car wreck with the four young people. It should be stressed that excessive speed was wrong. They were very lucky.
