I TRAVEL down the 2400 block of Melrose Avenue quite often taking my children to school and visiting some people I know. Lately I've noticed how it is turning into a parking lot. I see cars that have been parked without moving for several days. It's so sad to see that a such pleasant street is being turned into an obstacle course. It is dangerous. Do people not know the purpose of parking lots? And I'd like to know where the traffic cops are. Why is the problem not be deterred?...

Pleasant street becomes parking lot

Compliments on Jackson art show

MY COMPLIMENTS to the Jackson School District for their marvelous art show that was held April 18 at the junior high school. The students are wonderful. The teachers did a great job. It's great to see the public coming out to show its support. Thank you, Jackson schools.

SEMO minority programs aren't needed

THIS IS in response to the article on the minority panel. There is as much to do in Cape for black students as there is for white students on the weekend. SEMO needs to hold events to welcome all students, not just black students. There is no reason for SEMO to establish a cultural center for blacks only. They are welcome in any center or building. The chamber of commerce will provide any individual with information, so why should SEMO have to start workshops and start minority-owned businesses? Why should SEMO have to encourage minority high schools students to take preparatory sessions more than white students? There's absolutely no reason to establish a telephone network to better inform minority students of upcoming events. There is no white telephone network, and look at the cost factor. The black students have the same opportunity as the white students to attend college. SEMO even has a recruiting office in St. Louis for the minorities, but there is none for the white students. And look at the cost factor. Parents of all the other students at SEMO have to end up paying for all these programs not necessary because SEMO adds it to our tuition.

Keep government away from gambling cash

I THINK it is time the government gets their hand out of everybody's pocket. A friend went to the gambling boat and won $2,500. When he went to cash it in, he came out with $1,800. They took $700 away. I think the government should keep their fingers off our money. By the way, that doesn't include state taxes.

Kinder is partisan mudslinger

PETER KINDER is the pot calling the kettle black. I've never seen a more partisan mudslinger than Kinder in my life.

Mosley's letters are bright spot

ABOUT STEVE Mosley's so-called claptrap, I and many others I know enjoy and appreciate his rare tongue-in-cheek humor which some readers just don't get. Keep it up, Steve. It is a bright spot in so much depressing news of the day.

Ought to recognize a low blow

I SEE where Peter Kinder has accused Heckemeyer of low blows and cheap shots. Kinder ought to recognize them at a distance, because he's so good at them.

Doctor needs some manners too

RECENTLY I started to get dressed after my bath and noticed a tick on my back. I called a neighbor in, as I live alone, to pull it out. She said the head was still in my back and said I should go to a hospital emergency room and get it out because of Lyme disease. The young man who came out to see me said we don't have Lyme disease in Missouri, and he said that's just a lot of hype. He barely looked at my back and threw the papers on the desk and walked out. Do young doctors need more education on manners as well as on Lyme disease? What do you think?

God has more important things to do

I'D LIKE to respond to the misinformed caller who believes one man's skepticism took the lives of 1,500 souls aboard the Titanic. You need to start reading history books and stop believing everything you see in the movies. It was a White Star Lines comment, not some man on a dock, that stated "God himself cannot sink this boat." It was taken, as usual, out of context for the movie. And I do not believe for a second that God himself would choose to sink an entire ship full of people, the majority of which were oblivious to this marketing claim, just to spite this man. Wouldn't that be like cutting one's nose off to spite one's face? And the God I choose to believe in has better things to do than to kill more than 1,500 people to prove one man's or company's minor claim wrong.

Caution on Alzheimer's donations

I WOULD like to alert persons in the area about solicitations through the mail and telephone for the Alzheimer's Family Relief Program and Alzheimer's Disease Research of the American Health Assistance Foundation out of Rockville, Md. They are not connected nor do they have any affiliation with the Alzheimer's Association. They will not provide any information to the Better Business Bureau about their foundation or program. The Alzheimer's Association knows nothing about their work, nor will they supply any information. I personally have sent very healthy donations to these people as my husband was diagnosed at age 55 with this horrid disease. I was very saddened and extremely angered by this discovery, and I feel the need to pass it along. Thank you.

Is picking up trash illegal too?

I'M CALLING in regards to the Missourian article in which Pam Sanders told the people that it's illegal to pick up chairs and other articles that people put at the curb for the trash collection. She said this is called pilfering. My question is, is it then illegal to pick up soda cans people have thrown out, to pick up trash? Is it illegal to pick up plastic bags that the recycling truck has allowed to blow out like it did all along in front of St. Mark's Church about a month ago? Is it illegal to pick up trash at the curb and put it in a trash can? It's sound to me like it's illegal to do those things, so Delta Chi fraternity needs to be arrested for picking up litter along Route W.

City should buy weather radios

I DO not think a tornado siren warning system would work. If you have your windows closed and are asleep in the bedroom, chances are you won't hear the siren. Why doesn't the city invest in those weather radios that work on batteries and alert you in your bedroom if a storm is due? They could buy enough of the radios, and each homeowner would be required to put a deposit on it which would be refunded if you leave. Any homeowner who could not afford the deposit, the city could furnish it free. The city won't have to pay to have the siren system tested either. The radio puts out a signal and then tells you when and where the storm is due. There would be no maintenance costs.

Police scanner give weather alerts

I WAS just reading in Speak Out about people complaining about cable going every time it storms. I have a suggestion, there's one way to get around that: Either get a weather radio or get a police scanner. If you get a scanner, you're going to hear as it happens, because the police spotters are out there, and the emergency weather people are on the scanner too.

Will young workers feel the pain?

I WOULD like to make a comment on President Bill Clinton how he goes all across the United States and all across the world telling us, the American people -- especially the ones that didn't vote for him, that we have to do things for the children of the United States. I'd like to ask Clinton: What are the children going to think of him when they start working see where he has taken all their Social Security and they're going to have to pay Social Security and aren't going to receive it? How will the children feel then? Will Clinton feel their pain, or will the children feel Clinton's pain?
