I'VE BEEN watching the paper seeing if anybody said anything about the Judgment House that Lynwood Baptist Church did. I just want to say that they did an exceptional job on it, and it was really a great experience. I want to thank them for it. AFTER READING the article about the Salvation Army being overloaded with clothing and goods, I would suggest that they could eliminate that problem by actually giving away the things collected or else or charge for them at a price greatly reduced from than what they are charging now. ...

Good project at Lynwood Baptist

I'VE BEEN watching the paper seeing if anybody said anything about the Judgment House that Lynwood Baptist Church did. I just want to say that they did an exceptional job on it, and it was really a great experience. I want to thank them for it.

Give items to needy people

AFTER READING the article about the Salvation Army being overloaded with clothing and goods, I would suggest that they could eliminate that problem by actually giving away the things collected or else or charge for them at a price greatly reduced from than what they are charging now. The Salvation Army charges vastly more than any garage sale or used-clothing store in town. The things that are given to them are meant for needy people. They should give them to the needy people.

Other school programs besides sports

I JUST received a newsletter from my son's elementary school. It said, "In an effort to promote Tiger pride and support Central junior and high school athletics, the school district has adopted the Tiger mascot in orange and black school colors" for all elementary schools. I think this is wonderful, and I'm very glad the district is attempting to build a sense of unity and support within the entire district. But why is there absolutely no mention of other programs such as music and drama? Would it have not been better not to just single out the sports program, or is that exactly what was intended?

Wishy-washy on election monitoring

IF THERE is such widespread evidence of voter fraud in Southeast Missouri, why do Republican muckety-mucks keep saying there may be federal monitoring of elections or there might be federal supervision of elections? Why the equivocation? Quit pussyfooting around. Either call for federal occupation of Southeast Missouri this November or don't. This wishy-washyness is getting to me.

Will it still cost the taxpayers?

WILL MY money and yours, every taxpayers' money, have to go toward Bill Clinton's retirement whether he's impeached and found guilty, whether he resigns or whether he's exiled? I don't want to pay that sucker one red cent, not of my money anyway.

Common sense is still the best

SOME 40 years ago, I too became a Dr. Spock mother. My husband was in the service, and we found ourselves 1,000 miles from home with a new baby. I read the books and tried to follow the instructions, but when that child got so obnoxious, I couldn't tolerate him, I made a decision to teach as I was taught. He learned very quickly not to throw food in the floor, not to get into cabinets and not to mess with the plug-ins. I never ever bruised that child or the three that followed, and we have four adults to be proud of. I totally agree with columnist Walter Williams: Common sense makes more sense than the experts. The Bible says spare the rod and spoil the child. Every parent should read this column.

Party's leaders should lead

COME ON, Democratic leaders of the party. Save our party and show us the party still has legitimacy. Please press for Clinton's resignation so we may have a respectful presidency again.

Roses were a welcome treat

I JUST wanted to say it was nice of Knaup Floral to have that Good Neighbor Day where they gave away all those beautiful roses. God was good to me and let me receive two, one from my wonderful daughter and one from a very nice neighbor lady.

An effect on public education

YOU'RE STORY about the student suing the Woodland School District was very interesting. The student allegedly created a Web site and put some bad things on it about the school's teachers and administrators. Though the student removed the Web site when asked, the school district still socked him with a 10-day suspension. I assume the student created the Web site at home. Though understandable, I think the Woodland School District made a mistake for punishing the student for something at home. If he libeled the teachers or administrators, perhaps they could have sued him or his parents. The ultimate consequence of this case will be minimal in that all it will do is destroy public education.

Experts have helped Speak Out

SYNDICATED COLUMNIST Walter Williams recently challenged us to name one thing that has improved since so-called experts took over. Well, I can do it. Society has improved dramatically since public policy experts started calling Speak Out.

Cruel crimes deserve cruel deaths

I JUST got through watching ABC's special about death row. The inmates they interviewed stated very calmly they were not afraid to die because they would be sleep by injection, an easy death. Well, I have something to speak out about that. After what those men on death row did to the poor victims that they killed, instead of the easy way out, they should be taken out and beaten to death. Yes, that's what I said, they should be beaten to death. A very, cruel, hard death is what they deserve, and we should do such as that within a year after their sentence, and we wouldn't have as many people going around killing everyone.

Scouting and character

IN YOUR newspaper there's an advertisement for school night for Scouting. It has the symbol of the Boy Scouts and underneath it says character counts. Wow, doesn't that say it all? Character does count. Parents, I want to ask you to get involved in Scouts, either for boys or girls. Encourage your children to be in Scouts, and you've got to help too because there aren't enough good leaders. We need you. Get involved in Scouting because character does count.

Ruining the country's morals

THOSE WHO use the justification that Clinton is not the first to commit these crimes had better hope that he is the last or we all will be going to hell in a handbasket. He's ruining our country's morals and trying to make it seem trivial. Our children deserve much better. He and his henchmen and spinmeisters have about spun their last lies. He should resign or be impeached to save us all.

Get PA system fixed at stadium

YES, I had the pleasure of attending Southeast Missouri State University's football game with Truman State. Everything went really well except for one thing. The Board of Regents are wanting to raise $38 million to build a performance center on the other end of town, but they can't seem to get the PA system working properly at the ball game. I just don't understand what the problem is. This is two years in a row that it cracks out, it pops and everything else when the announcer announces anything to the crowd. And another thing, why can't we play some type of charge music instead of this garbage that they're playing in between bands? I almost lost my hearing listening to this garbage music they're playing instead of having some kind of pep music.

Others can withstand scrutiny

THERE WAS a Clinton defender who began his comment with "Is there anyone out there who could stand four years of scrutiny?" The answer is yes, there is. That would be Ronald Reagan, George Bush or Jimmy Carter for example. The caller also mentions the $40 million spent on the Whitewater investigation. That's the entire Whitewater investigation, not just the Monica thing. The person closes with, "Aren't you glad you aren't a sexy woman who threw yourself at a red-blooded American man?" I hasten to point out that this is a married red-blooded American man, and the idea that Monica Lewinsky threw herself at him is ridiculous. As an intern, she wouldn't have had access to him unless he wanted her to have it.

Another $40 million in China

IT'S GETTING to be a little exasperating with all the Speak Out callers, the president's spin doctors and all of his supporters who are constantly griping about the $40 million on this investigation on him over the past four years. That $40 million took a long time to spend, but he took 1,200 people to China on a recent visit to sell out our country again, and he spent $40 million on that trip. I think the other $40 million spent by the independent counsel was much better spent to find a criminal president at fault than the $40 million spent in China in less than two weeks for his own enjoyment and to sell out our country.
