Russian questions no Bible in schools

THERE'S A Russian general touring the U.S. giving his testimony, and I think it's extremely interesting. I'd like to share some of it from the recent issue of the Missouri Baptist paper, "The Word and Way." This general was the chief commander of the nation's combat troops and had a nickname of General War. He was a Communist all his life and just recently converted to Christianity "Your country was founded on God's principles. It's hard to believe such a wonderful country could deprive children from studying the Bible in school. I am equipped with a weapon, the most powerful weapon on the face of the earth, the Bible, the word of God. This is a weapon strong enough to overcome any enemy. It does not become obsolete. We need it like we need sun, air and water."

Congress balances the budget

IN CASE somebody out there doesn't know, Congress balances the budget. Bill Clinton -- no president -- has anything to do with it. Thank God we have a Republican Congress.

A Calvin Coolidge Congress

THIS IS what we call a Calvin Coolidge Congress, like the late Will Rogers said about Calvin Coolidge and his Congress: "Well, they didn't do nothing, but that's just what they expected when they elected him." You only deserve what you vote for. I want national health care and a stronger Social Security.

Human cockroaches during spring cleaning

I USED to think that spring cleaning week where Cape Girardeau citizens could set out unlimited amounts of bulky and outdated household garbage was a good idea. As I sat and watched the endless parade of refuse-ridden trucks stop so the passengers could sift through my trash, I realized that spring cleaning is nothing more than an opportunity for the human cockroaches of Cape Girardeau to feed off each other's filth.

President is best politician ever

IN his commentary, Gary Rust prints old, obsolete quotes from some of our country's founders. They talk about honesty and integrity, old ancient ideas. What are you trying to imply, Mr. Rust? Our president is the best politician we've ever had. He knows how to tell us what we want to hear, regardless of the truth. Mr. Rust, it is people such as you who cause unrest.

Mothers are best care givers

I'M CALLING in regard to the column by Mona Charen, "Child care: They cannot replace Mom." I agree with Mrs. Charen 100 percent. Mothers are the best people to care for their children. If a mother must work, she should be very careful to know everything possible about the child-care provider. But I think society has the cart before the horse. We are wanting welfare reform, yet we're willing to pay more for day care than what we provide mothers to take care of their children who are receiving public assistance. I think we should do more for mothers, especially single mothers, to become better parents. If they cannot, for whatever reason, provide for the needs of those children then we should seek a permanent place for those children outside the home. The children deserve better.

Likes new gardening column

I WOULD like to say that Mr. Schnare's gardening column was most interesting, and please keep more coming.

Where are the militia drills held?

THIS IS in response to a Speak Out comment concerning gun safety education. I notice the caller said he was not a redneck and that he believed in the Constitution. I believe in the Constitution too, and I would like to know what militia he drills with as per the Second Amendment of our U.S. Constitution.
