THIS IS about the seventh grader over in Illinois who's been suspended again because of the haircut he has. It shows him on television, and I can see nothing wrong with his haircut. What it seems like to me that there must be somebody at the school with a personal ax to grind...

Haircut issues is personal ax to grind

The magic of love has disappeared

TODAY THE magic of love has disappeared. Indoctrination into the fine art of sex or declining sex is a constant threat. To this new communicative world today, the magic of love has lost its privacy.

Test scores low in Democrat territory

I WANT to comment about Speak Out. I like to read Speak Out, but some of the people who call in show that it's truly a way to show your ignorance. It's better to keep your mouth shut and let people guess than to open it and let them know how ignorant you are. The person who called about the test scores being lowest in the South -- in other words, where Republicans are -- was wrong. They are not lower. Try Washington, D.C., New York, Boston, places like this. That's where the scores are low -- where the Democrats are in charge and the teachers' unions.

SEMO minorities reflect this region

THERE HAVE been numerous articles in the Southeast Missourian recently about Southeast Missouri State University's drive to increase minority enrollment. I fully realize that Southeast Missouri State University has become so politically correct in recent years it is virtually a little midwestern Berkeley. But this diversity business is ridiculous. Exactly what is the problem? If the 24-county Southeast Missouri region is 3.66 percent black and Southeast Missouri State University is presently 4 percent black, it would appear the enrollment at the university is proportionately correct. Is Southeast Missouri truly committed to diversity, or is it going along with the flow of the current politically correct higher education diversity fad? Or does Southeast Missouri State University just see black students as a lucrative enrollment market? Are potential black students just fodder to drive up the enrollment at Southeast Missouri State University and thereby secure the jobs of faculty and administrators?

Congressional pay raise is fair

I AM glad that Congress got a pay raise, because it's the first time in five years they've got a pay raise. They seem to have done a pretty good job along with the Clinton administration to keep the economy of the United States going very strongly. So in five years, a pay raise of two or three percent is fair enough, I think.

Where is the dollar theater?

I JUST noticed in the paper the talk about the PG movies. What I'd like to know is, where is the dollar theater? I can't afford to take my kids to any movies at these expensive theaters. The only one I can afford is the dollar theater, and they said they would only be closed for the summer.
