OpinionApril 18, 1996

I WOULD like to say, Mr. Kinder, I applaud you for your column on April 14. I don't care how much they say the homosexual lifestyle is an alternative lifestyle, it's still not a natural lifestyle. Common sense alone should tell people that there is no way two people of the same sex can replenish the earth in the way God ordained. I know that won't make them happy, but I don't care if they're happy or not...

Column had it right

I WOULD like to say, Mr. Kinder, I applaud you for your column on April 14. I don't care how much they say the homosexual lifestyle is an alternative lifestyle, it's still not a natural lifestyle. Common sense alone should tell people that there is no way two people of the same sex can replenish the earth in the way God ordained. I know that won't make them happy, but I don't care if they're happy or not.

Back to founding principles

I APPRECIATE the item in Speak Out regarding the partial-birth abortion ban that President Clinton vetoed last week. This is just another case of moral decay that we are trying to get across to the public to understand what President Clinton is really about. He talks of caring about families and wanting to help them and tries to pass himself off as a good family man when he is only a wolf in sheep's clothing. Do we want this type of person at the helm of our ship of state? Our country seems headed on a collision course, and we must do our utmost to turn ourselves around, back to the principles upon which this nation was founded.

Dog fine was too much

I WAS just given a ticket for my small dog. She was off the leash. It was a first offense, and they charged me $71 for one little ticket. I don't think the city should charge anyone that much for one dog being off the leash when we have dogs running all over the city of Cape in packs, mongrel dogs, that they don't do anything about. I do not think it's fair. I think it's too expensive for one small dog.

No help from Bob Dole

BOB DOLE has been mad ever since Clinton went to the White House. He said at the very beginning, "Well, he won't get any help from me." And he has not got any help from Dole. Dole is not qualified for president. He can't make a speech unless it's all written out for him. I hope he debates Clinton some time before the 1996 election. The Republicans don't have a record that has ever helped anyone except the rich, and Bob Dole would be the worst.

Figures stretch credibility

I MUST not be an average taxpayer. They keep saying on television that the average taxpayer works so many hours before they begin earning for themselves. Well, it's certainly isn't true with me, and I think they've got the figures wrong.

May I help you?

TO THE person who gave advice to patients who are offended very easily: In the first place, you are grammatically incorrect. You should say "May I help you?" not "can." And if you do not want a response, then say "I am going to help you" and do it and then get a life.

Dole won't be elected

COME ON, Republicans. Dole will never be elected president. I'm going to laugh all the way to the polls and then vote for Ross Perot again. The sad thing is, what will happen to this country with four more years of Bill Clinton? I say, "Hang in there, Pat Buchanan, we need someone."

More movies about blacks

I WOULD like to address the issue of who decides which black movies to show at the cinema. I would really like for the Southeast Missourian to look into this issue, because apparently the cinemas here do not realize that there are people of color who live in this town. It's terrible that we have to go across the river to Illinois to spend our money there to see a black movie. They put "Waiting to Exhale" here, yet they will not show Martin's new movie, "A Thin Line Between Love and Hate." Would someone please address this issue?

REPLY: There are many factors that go into choosing what movies to show here, including the numbers of available screens and the potential interest among movie-goers. The good news is that the movie mentioned above is opening in Cape Girardeau on Friday.

Minimum-wage idea too high

I HAVE to agree: This proposed minimum wage of $6.25 an hour for Missouri is outrageous. Where's this money going to come from, the taxpayers?

Gas prices lower in the hills

I JUST recently took a trip in the Ozarks and bought gas in Fredericktown and Eminence and I paid at both places $1.21 a gallon for super unleaded which is $1.32 and up here in Cape. I thought that was interesting because I've never noticed any towboats pushing barges containing petroleum on either the St. Francois River or the Jack's Fork River. I'm not certain, but that must mean that they have to truck all their fuel in to those hills while we have a port right here in the Cape Girardeau-Scott City area. I just thought it was interesting that they have to pay the extra money to have the fuel trucked in, and they can still charge 11 cents and more less a gallon. Interesting. Something to think about.

Remember Clinton and gays

I WOULD like to make a comment on same-sex marriages. You people calling in Speak Out, just remember who's responsible for this. It's Bill Clinton. Remember when you go to the polls and vote, it was Bill Clinton who said within 100 days that he was going to lift the ban on gays in the military, and it's Bill Clinton who is responsible for all of this.

Tax tardiness costs money

THIS IS for all the late income-tax filers. Who do you think is paying to keep the post offices and employees all over the country open until midnight for you to pay as late as possible? Look in the mirror. It's you. The only bad part is the rest of the people have to help pay. I think the post office should close at the regular time and let you pay a late charge if you are too lazy to do it on time, not the rest of the people. Think of the cost of all the post offices in the country staying open for you procrastinators.

No memorial for Waco

AS APRIL 29 approaches, I hear many references and condolences sent to the families and victims in Oklahoma City. What makes me sad is that no one remembers the men, women and children and their families who died on April 19 in Waco.
