Politicians and veterans

I WOULD like to voice my opinion about the congressmen and all politicians in recognition of Memorial Day, what they say about how they owe the veterans so much and they are so sorry about the veterans. Well, that's true. They are sorry about the veterans. The next day they go back after promising the veterans something and try to see how much they can cut out of the budget for the veterans or close their hospitals. Or, instead of remembering the veterans in a good way, they remember in a way to take things away somehow. I think it's very bad, and I hope other veterans will sit up and take notice of this. When time comes to vote, remember those people.

Homeless and hungry

I HAVE a response to "Where are the homeless?" If this person would like to see homeless, go out to an affluent area like Santa Monica, Calif. There's a park nearby, apartment houses and very nice homes that are completely filled with homeless people and tents. There are people on sidewalks, people behind these affluent areas that are living in alleys. I'd also like to make a comment: "Where are the people that need food, nobody is starving in America?" This is the most ridiculous statement that Barry Goldwater made, which turned me completely off him. There are people who go hungry every night. As far as welfare, as far as food stamps, they're once a month, and if you don't get low in groceries by the end of the month, then you're a miracle worker. And I challenge anybody to try it and see how it works. I'm not on welfare, but if I were I would not be ashamed of it because that's what it's there for: to help. I think anybody who says otherwise is hypocritical because it could happen to anybody.

It's our money

SEN. JOHN Ashcroft's bill to roll back the taxes on Social Security wages was defeated. They said it would cost too much. If I remember correctly, it was $260 billion. What they're really doing is taking $260 billion from us taxpayers and saying "we don't want to give it back to you." I think that would be the bottom line.

Kindness at Safehouse

DURING RANDOM Acts of Kindness Week, the Cape Girardeau County Democratic Women showered the Women's Safehouse with toiletries. However, in keeping with the spirit of the Democratic Party, we believe every week should be a week where an open heart and kindness is exhibited toward our fellow man. We would like to challenge other organizations such as ours to keep the random acts of kindness going 52 weeks a year.

More accurate statement

SOMEONE says that the president has done more for this country than anyone's done in the last 25 years. Wouldn't it be more correct to say that he's done more to the country?

Attention deficit

INSTEAD OF mass drug testing of Americans who apply for welfare benefits, maybe the politicians should be tested for attention deficit disorder.

Management is problem

THE AIRPORT is not a liability. The city management of the airport is a liability. The airport is an asset to bring industry and development to this community. It needs to be marketed and managed to bring industry. Wake up and smell the coffee, people.

Two-year design?

THIS IS an old, grumpy grandpa. I'm curious. Why in the world would it take two years to design a torch? My goodness gracious, they designed multistoried buildings in that length of time. Somebody's got to be pulling my leg.

Motorcycle perils

I SEE in the paper where we have had another police officer injured in a motorcycle accident. It's my feeling that it's time for Cape Girardeau to do away with their motorcycles and keep using patrol cars because riding motorcycles is very dangerous in this town. I ride one. I've been riding one for 40 years. It seems that they're hard to see. Some people aren't oriented to realize that vehicles are not toys or motor scooters. They do move at a fast rate of speed. Sometimes they're just overlooked or they don't see them or they use misjudgment. We had a good friend, Dan Niswonger, injured seriously, and now we've got another officer injured. I think that the chief of police and the city council should take a close look at this situation and maybe do away with the motorcycle patrols.

Dole's theme

AFTER READING Bob Dole's campaign plan, the theme of his campaign should be "If you don't expect anything, you won't be disappointed."

Killing the innocent

IS AMERICA too bright to see that abortion is murder? There is so much killing of the innocent going on in our country. Is that what people want to know our home as: America, land of the murderers? When we kill these children, we are killing part of a nation. God gave us life. Only he has the right to take it away.

Graphics were wrong

I'M CALLING about the letter regarding the questions that were given to high school students on a television program. One thing that bothered me about that program: The graphics that were used on the television screen were written in uppercase letters except they had a small dotted i. I called them about it and told them about it. They said they would fix it. They never did. If they're going to talk about people's education, they need to check their education.

Thanks for golf support

I WAS not in town when you all had the acts of kindness week. I would like to say that I want to thank Mr. Brockmire for supporting me on the golf course all these years.

Jackson graduation

MY GRANDSON graduated in Jackson last Thursday night. I just wanted to say what a wonderful ceremony it was. The crowd was large. The kids were well behaved. The speaker was excellent. Everything was just wonderful. What a wonderful end to a school year. I was very impressed.

Facts about torch banners

THIS IS a response to the column Marc Powers wrote regarding the Olympic torch as a symbol for advertisers. Mr. Powers says, "One wonders if the city is getting a kickback for allowing the Coke people to hang advertising banners all over town. If money is to be made, the city's entitled to a cut." Mr. Powers, here are the facts: No. 1, you did not know all the facts. No. 2, the banners around town were placed on the torch route. We put them out to allow people of Cape Girardeau and Jackson to be aware the torch was coming through Cape Girardeau and Jackson on May 27. No. 3, these banners were not put up by Coke people. These banners, Mr. Powers, were put up by volunteers like myself. No. 4, Central States Coca-Cola donated the banners and paid for the printing of the banners. This was done by Coke so we could let people know the torch was coming to Cape Girardeau and Jackson. This is a once-in-a-lifetime event for some people. We were trying to make the awareness happen. The fact is, Mr. Powers, you did not look into the total facts. You made assumptions.

Kind words for teacher

I'D LIKE to congratulate Mrs. Herring, the fifth grade teacher at St. Mary's. She's my former teacher, and she's the best. Congratulations on 25 years there.
