I WISH Congressman Emerson a recovery, I hope the best for him but I do hope he's considering when he gets those bills how much it would cost him if he didn't have the insurance that we the people furnish for him. Medical costs

I WISH Congressman Emerson a recovery, I hope the best for him but I do hope he's considering when he gets those bills how much it would cost him if he didn't have the insurance that we the people furnish for him. I want him to see how much it would cost and then put himself in the shoes of somebody who works for fast food and has to pay it out of his pocket.

Costly decision

IF YOU think that Illinois Governor Edgar has spared a life in commuting the sentence of the female murderer, you'd better think again. All he's done is sentence the American taxpayer to yet another way to keep up another murderer at taxpayers' expense. This should be stopped.

American dream

I REALLY admire Hillary Clinton. Think how tough it must have been passing those college exams at Harvard without the benefit of a memory. One also has to admire all of her aides and associates who rose to take the positions in the highest levels of government while not being able to remember anything. So next time you're feeling sorry for yourself, just remember. These people up in the White House overcame their deficiencies and rose to prominence. The American dream is alive and well.

Hooray for flat tax

I JUST wanted to say hooray to the Republican Party and their flat tax plan. I only think it should be less. It's time for the hogs to get away from the trough and start going to work like the rest of us do.

Minors and tobacco

I WOULD like to speak out against the stores that sell cigarettes to minors. There's a big deal in the paper about spending money for a drug dog. Now if they'd start enforcing the tobacco laws where most children get their start as drug abusers, that would put a stop to it as opposed to waiting until later when it's already become a problem. I think that anybody who sells cigarettes or any tobacco product to a minor should be treated just like any other drug pusher.

Different music

I JUST wanted to say that I agree with Marc Powers' column saying the Show Me Center needs to book bands from a broader market than just country music. As a college student, I would definitely pay to see one of the many college bands that are floating around. It would also help make SEMO University more appealing and make Cape a real college town.

He knew the rules

AS AN official here in the area I'm very appalled by the fact that the Southeast Missourian would name an official just because he'd thrown out a local coach. It's the coach's fault that he was thrown out. He knew the rules, and I am glad that he will be serving a one-game suspension.

A great writer

I JUST want to say it is amazing how many really good writers the Missourian has on their staff. You have Heidi, and O'Farrell, you have Powers and Sullivan and Sam Blackwell, who I think is really the best writer that you have. He is a remarkable person. He doesn't march to the same drumbeat that most of us do, but he is a great writer in my estimation. DC, his wife, must be a living doll to be able to go along with all of the things that they do together. They seem to love every living thing on this earth, and I admire that the most.

Chilly attitude

WHILE THE temps may be chilly outside, let's think about the hot, breezy summer months ahead. I hate not being able to hear the Cardinal games because some buffoon has his lawn mower blasting at 7 in the evening. Also, those out of shape people wearing those pitiful, baggy shorts. I, for one, appreciate cold weather.

About FDR

I'M STILL waiting for some historian to make one point about Franklin Roosevelt. He made it novel for millions of citizens to expect to live off other citizens' earnings. Whether you approve or not, that's a profound change in the nature and structure of the American political system. It creates conflicts of interest that should at least give us qualms.

Gephardt's fault

I DO not mind telling you this at all. Dick Gephardt is an out and out liar. I'm ashamed to say that, because he's from Missouri.

Easy sentence

I SAW that Camellia Foulks could be sentenced to 364 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. She got almost as easy as O.J. did. That just shows you can kill people and not have to worry about it.

A class act

QUOTE FROM Friday's Speak Out: Nobody wants to see Rod Stewart perform." On the other hand, I and half the other known world would love to see Rod Stewart perform. Please, Show Me Center, show a little taste. Rod Stewart is a class act.

Honest people

I WISH in this way to thank the lady who turned in the envelope from the Missourian to Shoney's. It's nice to know there are honest people in our town.
