I'M A DEMOCRAT, and I voted for Clinton, but I'm wondering if I made a mistake. What in the world is he doing by sticking his nose in the business of the baseball strike? What with everything else going on in this country and around the world, why would he be concerned about a group of millionaire owners and a group of millionaire players and not take care of the business at hand? I'm not against anyone making all the money they can, but I do believe that the owners should be able to determine what they can and should pay their players. ...

Clinton and baseball

I'M A DEMOCRAT, and I voted for Clinton, but I'm wondering if I made a mistake. What in the world is he doing by sticking his nose in the business of the baseball strike? What with everything else going on in this country and around the world, why would he be concerned about a group of millionaire owners and a group of millionaire players and not take care of the business at hand? I'm not against anyone making all the money they can, but I do believe that the owners should be able to determine what they can and should pay their players. On the other hand I believe the players should have what they can get if they earn it. I'd just wish we'd get on with business and stop this foolishness about the baseball strike.

Author Rosa Parks

WHAT DOES one have to do to become an author like Rosa Parks? Only thing she ever did to my knowledge was rebel. Does that make her a writer, an author? If Rosa Parks is a legitimate author simply because she rebelled against something, then I'm a pregnant pole vaulter.

Foreign T-shirt

I GAVE blood to the Red Cross, I was just looking at the T-shirt they gave me. Guess where it's made? The Dominican Republican.

Already a tax?

THE CITY is going to ask the voters of Cape Girardeau once again to pass a transportation tax for the streets and upkeep. If this passes, are they going to remove the tax that was put on years ago to resurface existing streets? I will not vote for the transportation tax until they come clean and tell the people that there is already a tax for resurfacing streets.

Unfair treatment

I'D LIKE to make a complaint. It seems like the Southeast Missourian shows so much disrespect for the president of the United States. It's Clinton this, Clinton that. They never refer to him as the president, which he is, whether they like it or not. I know they don't like it, because they hard-boiled Republicans. When Reagan, Bush and all that bunch was in there, it was Mr. President, Mr. Bush this, Mr. Reagan that. I think Mr. Clinton deserves the same, putting Mr. in front of his name whether you people like it or not. That is what is right. And there's a lot of people out here who like Mr. Clinton, not Clinton as you people call him up there. I get tired of the disrespect that is shown the president.

REPLY: No disrespect is intended in referring to the president or anyone else by their last names without using Mr. or Mrs. President Clinton is frequently mentioned by title in the Missourian, but usually on the first reference.

Minimum wage farce

I THINK this minimum wage hike the president is talking about is just a big farce. If you raise minimum wage, the price of a hamburger is going to go up, the price of clothes is going to go up, and you're not going to be any better off than you are now.

Keeping order

I HOPE you were watching the city council. I can't believe an educated person would drag out an old news clipping to prove his out-of-order point. I was so proud of our mayor. He was a perfect gentleman, very professional and showed that the people were included in his new tax plan, which will not hurt anyone, and which we need badly. Our streets have gone to pot. Doesn't Mr. Eggimann know that everything has gone up, or does he not shop? Our old taxes need to be voted on and yes the people need an input. Mr. Eggimann seems to think the council should have all the input. Why does he think we voted? Because we wanted intelligent people to help us. But if this was an example of their meeting, Mayor, you have your work cut out for you.

Tickets in Advance

I BELIEVE your article on Feb. 8 concerning Advance speeding tickets having political implications is wrong. I believe your reporter allowed one candidate from Advance to use him and to use the Missourian as a platform for office. I ask anyone to tell me how many tickets are too many? If you stop 10 speeders each going 15 miles over the speed limit, which one should receive a ticket, or should only two be cited? Advance is a much better town because of our police, and the crime-accident rates are down because of the police force.

Getting the facts

THANK GOD. For the first time in about 10 or 15 years we have a radio talk show host that really gets down to issues and talks about the publicly hidden issues that the liberal elite have caused, such as the North American Man-Boy Love Association that likes to have sex with children. The reason it's not public information is the gay community doesn't want any damaging news like this to get out. So if you liberal Democrats think it's okay to have sex with kids as young as two and three, it's finally time that someone came out and told the people, because newspapers and stuff will simply refuse, because there's a largely gay contingence in the news media that refuses to shows this stuff.

Suggestion for savings

THE CITY wants a sales tax to pay for city street projects. May I suggest one way the city can save some money? Stop putting so much sand and salt on the streets when we have a little snow. We have entirely too much on our street. If this continues, all the streets in Cape Girardeau will have to repaired or replaced.

Caring for all

THE PASTOR was right on target when he said that people in the church are snubbing those they are beneath them. I tell you what, those are the ones who God loved the most, and those are the ones who served God the most. As a parent of a handicapped child, we too were snubbed in churches, and I have found my peace in God today. We worship and serve the Lord in the neighborhood and in the community and within the confines of four church walls. Sad isn't it? But thank God he gives us all gifts and talents to serve him and help and love one another.

Getting a raise

ABOUT THIS minimum wage: There are a lot of people working and their wives have to work too to keep things going, and that's why there are a lot of children getting in trouble right now. I think the Congress won't do anything about it, because every time they want a raise, they just vote themselves one and they don't have to worry about someone giving them a raise.
