Tax makes sense, but...

A TAX to repair Cape Girardeau's badly depleted streets makes a lot of sense to me. But to widen some streets to four lanes makes no sense, for Cape Girardeans almost all use their part of a four-lane street as if it were just one, and nobody can pass them. Also, I'm afraid that certain streets that would only need pothole repair would be black-topped over, as was done to two blocks of North Louisiana that was in good shape before the city black-topped it and in doing so destroyed the ground between the sidewalks and the street. A really intelligent and cost-conscious engineer should evaluate and make estimate costs before anything like what happened on North Louisiana takes effect. So I'm doubtful about the proposed tax, as I think about the past.

Stifling comments

THOSE WHO generally object to Speak Out are people in public or private positions of power and authority. Their attempt to stifle anonymous commentary is usually triggered by observations which criticize their efforts. I doubt they are too disturbed by praiseworthy or patronizing ones. To them, projecting the appearance of unanimity or conformity may be more important than finding out what citizens might really think. Their objection to Speak Out is understandable, but wrong-headed. If the right to dissent, publicly or otherwise, is not good for a community, then one of the fundamental underpinnings of a free society is incorrect. History seems to prove otherwise. Joe Sullivan's rationale for Speak Out was excellent. It is a forum for the voice of the people. If they don't have a legal right to be heard, they deserve to be. Because we live in a free society, some think Speak Out must be tolerated as a necessary evil. I think it is a positive good. I live in a community where a city councilman attacked a Speak Out comment. Official criticism of the Speak Out forum from the powers that be demonstrate how valuable it is. Keep it up.

Next time call a vet

I AM outraged concerning the shutdown of the Bertrand kennels as reported by the Southeast Missourian. Why in the world would an attorney general call in the humane society to assess the situation as authorities on the subject? I think a better choice would have been to call in several veterinarians for their opinions. The attorney general who called for the humane society made a grave error.

Disillusioning trial

DOES ANYBODY know of another country or an island where one could move to get out of this country? I'm so disillusioned and so disappointed in this country, because I know every that every attorney on the so-called dream team of O.J. Simpson's knows that he is guilty, but they are draining him dry. It's so disillusioning to think that an attorney would do anything for money and care less about the truth. It's very disappointing to me.

Cheers for KFVS

I JUST wanted to say that I think the new KFVS news report is terrific. I like the new backgrounds. I don't care too much for the flying weather. Sometimes I get a little motion sickness. I really like Lisa's new hair style.

No war in Vietnam?

NO WAR was declared for Vietnam. Why does a group of cry-babies continue to cry?

Iwo Jima casualties

THERE WERE over 3,000 Marines killed at Iwo Jima and a lot more wounded. My grandfather was one of them.

Un-American commentary

I JUST want to make the comment that I think the Southeast Missourian has been printing cartoons and articles about President Clinton that are absolutely to be considered un-American. At what point and time do you draw the line between comedy and political satire and actually what could be considered un-American activities? Bill Clinton is the president of the United States, and I think as such he deserves your respect and your consideration.

North a disgrace

OLLIE NORTH is a disgrace to the Marine Corps and his country. He and his like is what's wrong with our country.

Cheers for Eastlick

I WANT to congratulate Jay Eastlick on his column in Saturday's paper on the case for college standards. It was really well-written and to the point. I agree with the person who wrote in and asked Jay to get a new picture. Jay, you look like a police mug shot. How about a new picture that shows a clean-shaven face or a full beard?
