Dole another Reagan?

BOB DOLE says if you want another Reagan in the White House, vote for him. Well, I've had enough Reagan to last a lifetime. And how did Reagan manage things? By going outside the law with the help of his people like Ollie North, Bud McFarland others. I'm sure Bob Dole knows all about this. I wonder if you're fair enough to print this in Speak Out.

REPLY: We're fair enough to print it, but we wonder if the caller is being fair to Reagan, who hasn't been charged or convicted of any criminal activity during his presidency. Is this guilt by association?

It's a mourning dove

I'M JUST calling to inform you that the turtledove on the front page of the Wednesday paper is not a turtle dove. It is a mourning dove. There's a big difference.

REPLY: The caller is correct. The turtledove can be one of several small pigeons, especially (ital) Streptopelia turtur. (end ital) The mourning dove is a wild American dove, (ital) Zenaida macroura. (end ital) Both have plaintive coos.

Taxation and bureaucrats

IN HIS 1962 book "Out of Step" Frank Chodorov said: "I would like to vote for a candidate who pledged himself to abolish taxation in toto, for my reason tells me that underlying all the ills of society is this predatory institution. I would surely profit if I were not taxed and so would all the producers. The only ones who would suffer from such an arrangement would be the drones, the bureaucrats who would be compelled to work for their keep. But since the abolishing of taxes would put the politician out of a job and would make impossible his dispensation of special privileges, it is not likely that I shall have the opportunity for such a candidate. Lacking that opportunity, I see no reason for registering my faith in the lesser of two evils. If memory serves me right, the lesser of either party who attained office has always increased the taxes I have to pay." I think that's the most revealing, most truthful statement about taxation, bureaucrats and politicians I've ever seen or read anywhere.

Rocket scientist needed

HERE IS my nomination for the Albert Einstein genius award. I just bought a piece of rather expensive equipment. This equipment came in a cardboard carton with 2x4s around it, heavy nails and brackets. It also came on a wooden pallet. There were no instructions with this piece of equipment. My husband and I decided the instructions might be in the carton. We unpacked it and disassembled the cardboard carton, took off the 2x4s and did away with the wooden pallet. Inside the piece of expensive equipment were the instructions, and the very first thing the instructions said was "Please do not unpack this carton by taking the cardboard carton and undoing the 2x4s." What kind of genius would put those in the center? I don't know. Maybe Albert Einstein does.

Put delinquents to work

TEACH JUVENILE delinquents to work and be productive by using them to pick up litter along streets and park. The litter along Kingshighway and the Independence bridge is unbelievable. Also the Central HIgh School area along Independence. It could all be so beautiful if litter free. Cleanliness is next to godliness.

Recycling snafu

I TOOK my newspapers down to the curb in a little cart. I thought I'd give the city a little break. I gave them a couple of aluminum cans. I laid them right on top of the newspapers. They refused to pick them up. They said I had not segregated my recycling. This is a joke. If you want people to recycle, make it a little easier. People in other places are stealing newsprint because of the value of it.

Cut the weeds, please

NOW WE have lights at the I-55-Highway 61 intersection. Could the highway department please cut the weeds? It looks so hideous. It is the most neglected intersection on I-55.

Make welfare temporary

WELFARE NEEDS to be changed. Welfare should be temporary. It should not be permanent.
