EAST PRAIRIE -- Norma E. Powers, 78, of East Prairie Route 1, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 1991, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. She was born Aug. 13, 1913 in East Prairie, the daughter of Ernest and Anna Pope Mansfield. She lived her entire life near East Prairie, where she attended and graduated from East Prairie Schools. She attended Southeast Missouri Teachers College where she majored in elementary education...

EAST PRAIRIE -- Norma E. Powers, 78, of East Prairie Route 1, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 1991, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

She was born Aug. 13, 1913 in East Prairie, the daughter of Ernest and Anna Pope Mansfield.

She lived her entire life near East Prairie, where she attended and graduated from East Prairie Schools. She attended Southeast Missouri Teachers College where she majored in elementary education.

She taught in schools in Mississippi County for 30 years. She helped organize the first all-day Head Start Program in East Prairie, where she served as coordinator for seven years.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in East Prairie, the Missouri Retired Teachers Organization, and the Eastern Star chapter in Charleston. She was a chartered member of the Women's Improvement Club in East Prairie.

On June 30, 1934 at Bloomfield, she married Harold A. Powers, who survives of the home.

Also surviving are one daughter, Ruthann Maxwell of East Prairie; a sister, Ruth Mansfield Lyke of East Prairie; two granddaughters, Leanne Maxwell of Sikeston and Kelly Maxwell of Coldwater, Miss.; one nephew; and one great-nephew.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Beck.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie.

Funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dave Bowden, pastor of the First Christian Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the East Prairie Memorial Park Cemetery.
