BERTRAND -- Ulus Harper, 78, Route 1 Bertrand, died Saturday, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was born May 20, 1913 in Bertrand, Mo. to Johnson and Cora Rudd Harper. He was a retired farmer. He was a charter member of Bement Baptist Church at Bertrand, where he taught Sunday school and had served as a church deacon since 1947...

BERTRAND -- Ulus Harper, 78, Route 1 Bertrand, died Saturday, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born May 20, 1913 in Bertrand, Mo. to Johnson and Cora Rudd Harper. He was a retired farmer. He was a charter member of Bement Baptist Church at Bertrand, where he taught Sunday school and had served as a church deacon since 1947.

He first married Stella Pauline McKinley, who preceded him in death March 26, 1967. He then married Isadora Gregory on Dec. 28, 1968. She survives.

Other survivors include: one son, Donald Harper of Sikeston; six daughters, Virginia Learue and Anita McKinnie, both of Sikeston, and Betty Holland, Geraldine White, Joan Bacchus, and Janet Hatley, all of Bertrand; one brother, Lalas Harper of Morganfield, Ky.; two sisters, Bessie Blackburn and Myrtle Werschington, both of Collinsville, Ill.; two step-sons, Ronnie Payne of Bertrand and Percy Payne of Florissant; three step-daughters, Mary Lee Holman of Cairo, Ill., Judy Holifield of Fayetteville, N.C., and Sharon Cupples of Henderson, Tenn.; 21 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

A daughter, three brothers and one step-daughter preceded him in death.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gordon Adank, pastor of Bement Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery at Charleston.
