The psychology of aging, from life review to how different personalities adjust to growing older, will be the topic for the Adults with Aging Parents Support Group when it meets Sept. 30.

The group will meet at Southeast Missouri Hospital's regional cancer center from 7-8:30 p.m.

Established in 1990, the support group is intended for individuals caring for frail parents, relatives or friends. Support group facilitator Janet Stewart, Southeast's gerontology nurse, said one-third of home caregiving falls on the shoulders of family members or friends.

"Though most older people wish to be independent of their families, it is primarily their children whom they turn to for general assistance," Stewart said. "Many middle-aged people are sandwiched between the demands of their own young children in addition to an aging parent or relative.

"The responsibilities associated with such care are often long-term and emotionally wearing. It is the goal of the support group to offer education and support from others in similar situations as well as to link families with professional resources that may be needed when caring for an elderly relative."
