SEMO'S COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS TO DISCUSS EUROPE'S REVOLUTIONS

"Eastern Europe's Revolutions" will be the topic of a seminar at 7:30 tonight in the University Center Ballroom at Southeast Missouri State University.

Under the auspices of the College of Liberal Arts, the seminar will analyze contemporary events and will feature eight faculty members who have traveled and studied in Eastern Europe. The faculty members will make brief presentations followed by questions and comments from the audience.

Leading the seminar will be history professor Charles Bonwell, an expert in European history. He will present an overview of the developments in Eastern Europe in the 20th century and will sketch common themes in the revolutions.

Other faculty to speak and the topics they will address are: Jean Benton, education; Carol Anne Costabile, German; Dan Dunavan, music; Betty Fulton, economics; Kenneth Heischmidt, marketing; Ed Smith, art; and Peter Yaremko, political science.

Martin Jones, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, will moderate the discussion.

Benton traveled in Eastern Europe with Southeast students last spring and was in the Soviet Union this past summer. She will discuss educational changes.

Costabile has lived in the former East Germany and conducted research there. She will discuss literary influences on revolution.

Dunavan, percussionist in the music department, traveled to Bulgaria this summer with Bonwell, Heischmidt and Smith. He will share his observations about music and culture.

Fulton, former vice president for administration and finance at Southeast, traveled about 50 days last spring in Europe, conducting research on current economic developments in Poland and Bulgaria.

Heischmidt, a marketing and sociology expert, will discuss the problems of developing market economies in the Eastern bloc.

Smith will discuss the arts and his impressions of Bulgarian life.

Yaremko, who was born in the Ukraine and who visited the region in 1989, will analyze ethnicity and political conflict.
