CAPE GIRARDEAU -- A century of Irving Berlin will be celebrated Jan. 14 when Cape Girardeau Community Concerts presents "The Irving Berlin Century.

The concert features entertainer Earl Rose, his orchestra, singers and dancers.

The performance begins at 8 p.m. at Academic Auditorium on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.

Admittance is by membership in the Community Concert Association or by college identification. For information on membership, contact Judy Thorpe at 335-6789.

The show is a sampling of Berlin's most-loved melodies, including waltzes, "Always" and "Remember;" smooth Fred Astaire favorites, "Puttin' on the Ritz" and "Cheek to Cheek;" Ethel Merman hits, "There's no Business Like Show Business" and "I've Got The Sun in the Morning;" patriotic tunes including "God Bless America;" and holiday favorites "White Christmas" and "Easter Parade."

Rose is an entertainer who combines classical technique with contemporary improvisation.

Born and raised in New York City, Rose began his classical piano studies at the age of 7. He graduated from the Mannes College of Music and also attended the University of California-Los Angeles, the Vienna Academy of Music and the Juilliard School, where he studied conducting.

He is currently composing music for the NBC television series "Another World." Most recently he completed the score for the ABC "Afternoon Special" "My Dad Can't Be Crazy, Can He?"

As a composer for the television series "Ryan's Hope," Rose received three Emmy Award nominations for Best Music direction and composition for a dramatic series. He also wrote the recent Johnny Mathis recording, "Right From the Heart."

Rose frequently acts as an assistant music conductor for the "Tonight Show" and has composed many of the featured songs for the CBS and PBS "Captain Kangaroo" series.

His most recent release is called "Earl Rose Plays Irving Berlin."
