FLAT RIVER -- East Missouri Action Agency here has received a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for a full year of funding for the Head Start program in its eight-county area, 8th District U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson announced.

Emerson said the $1,061,492 grant will fund the program during 1991 in the eight counties of Cape, Bollinger, Iron, Madison, Perry, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve and Washington.

Emerson said statistics show Head Start Works. He said, "Head Start students are 65 percent more likely to graduate from high school" and are "one-third more likely to pursue a college or vocational education after high school."

He said, "By bringing 3-, 4- and 5-year-old children from disadvantaged homes into a strong learning environment, our children are becoming better prepared."
