Sgt. Murphy is the son of MSgt. Hubert Murphy, USAF retired of Jackson and the late Helen Clark Murphy of Sikeston.
He is a graduate of Matthews High School.
He enlisted in the Air Force in 1977, and is a weapons specialist with the 23rd TFW, working with the A10 Warthog aircraft.
He has been stationed in the gulf since mid-September.
