Dahms is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, where he majored in geography, cartography and military science.

He is the son of Virginia Dahms of Cape Girardeau and the late Lt. Charles Dahms.

He married the former Myra Nagovan of Wisconsin and they have two children.
