CAPE GIRARDEAU - Michael D. Kohlfeld of Cape Girardeau has been recognized with the 1991 Catholic Elementary School Distinguished Graduate Award. The honor was given by the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA).

Kohlfeld was named a "distinguished graduate" of St. Vincent de Paul School in Cape. He was honored for his work in promoting Catholic education in this area.

He was graduated from St. Vincent in 1965. He attended Notre Dame High School, and earned a bachelor of science degree from Southeast Missouri State University.

Kohlfeld co-chaired the Notre Dame High School "Margin of Excellence Committee" which raised $1.2 million to further area Catholic education.

He is an active member of the board of directors for the following institutions: Southeast Missouri State University Copper Dome Society, the American Cancer Society, Cape Chamber of Commerce (vice chairman), Community Counseling Center, First Exchange Bank, Girl Scout Council, and the Cape Parks and Recreation Department.

Kohlfeld is the general manager for Kohlfeld Distributing, Inc. and resides in Cape Girardeau with his wife, Barbara, and three children: Alexandra, Courtland and Parker.

This marks the first year that the NCEA has awarded these distinguished graduate awards. A large number of schools from across the country participated in the program.

In order to receive the honor, an individual must have graduated from a Catholic elementary school, and have made some significant contribution which reflects favorable on the education the person received.

NCEA is the largest, private, professional education association in the world. Founded in 1904, the association's membership represents more than 200,000 educators serving 7.6 million students in Catholic education at all levels, including pre-school, elementary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, seminaries, and religious education programs.
