Sgt. Birkman is the son of Betty Birkman and Charles Birkman of Cape Girardeau.
He graduated from Advance High School in 1982 and enlisted in the Army in 1983.
Before being sent to Saudi Arabia, he was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas.
His wife, Selena and the couple's three children, William, Bryan and Rachal are living in Advance.
