PERRYVILLE -- Three new members were elected Tuesday to the Perry County 32 Board of Education.

Dennis R. Martin and June Bodenschatz defeated four others, including incumbent Wayne Schindler, each winning a three-year term on the board. Schindler trailed Bodenshatz by only 10 votes.

Donna Tucker was victorious over Raymond Monier for a one-year term on the board.

Voter turnout was about 21 percent, which Perry County Clerk Randy Taylor called about average for local elections.

In Perryville city races, incumbent Paul Dunlap was re-elected over challenger John A. Hagar by a margin of 312-62. In Ward 2, incumbent J. Paul Simpson defeated Clarence "Jack" Zahner for the seat, with 255 votes to Zahner's 145.

Incumbent David E. Nagle was also successful in his re-election bid for a Ward 3 seat. Nagle defeated challenger Gertrude Unterreiner by a margin of 223 to 49.

In the school board race, Martin led the voting with 831 votes. Bodenschatz received 736, followed by Schindler, 726; Roger Broeker, 291; Helen Brewer, 191; and Wiliferd Lair, 164.

For the one-year term, Tucker received 1,163 votes to Monier's 376.

Lair is the former director of special services for the district. He resigned in August after the district was cited for civil rights violations in two investigations by the federal Office of Civil Rights.

Schindler was the only incumbent to file for re-election. Other seats had been held by Jim Chappius and David Crader.
