CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Students from St. Vincent de Paul grade school earned district honors last weekend in a math contest.

The contest, sponsored by Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics, was held in Sikeston; 17 area schools participated.

Jeremy Bratton took first place and Tommy Berkbigler took fourth place in the seventh grade competition. As a first place winner, Bratton will advance to state competition May 4 in Columbia.

The St. Vincent's math team scored second place in the contest. Team members are Nichole Buehrle, Tommy Berbigler Jeremy Bratton and Jenny Layton.

Students on the individual level took an hour-long test and were ranked by their score.

In the team competition, students were given math problems to solve within a specified time limit. The team had to settle on one answer to each problem.

Virginia Sander, junior high math teacher at St. Vincent's, coached the team and students in the individual events.
