The sixth annual Missouri Student Mathematics Regional Contest was held recently on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.

The event was sponsored by the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Area students in grades four through six competed in three events: problem solving, geometric and numeric concepts, and estimation and computation. The top three winners in each division will compete Saturday in the state mathematics contest at Columbia.

The contest, sponsored by the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics, is the only statewide math contest for students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Following are the top area winners in the regional contest as listed by city.

Cape Girardeau: Fourth grade Jonathan Anderson, Alma Schrader School, first in estimation-computation, concepts and problem solving; Joe Essner, St. Vincent de Paul, first in concepts and problem solving; Ryan Fenwick, St. Vincent de Paul, second in concepts; Kristy Jansen, St. Mary's, second in estimation-computation and concepts; Cecilia Kuntz, St. Vincent de Paul, first in concepts; Courtney Maguire, Franklin, first in problem solving; and Michael Wehner, St. Mary's, second in problem solving.

Fifth grade Laura Cupples, Clippard, second in problem solving; and Bill Morgan, Alma Schrader, first in concepts.

Sixth grade Chris Patterson, St. Mary's, first in estimation-computation; Wade Russell, Alma Schrader, second in concepts and problem solving.

Jackson: Ryan Kasten, sixth grade, West Lane, second in problem solving; Jennifer Kelley, fourth grade, North Elementary, second in estimation-computation; Jesse Perry, sixth grade, West Lane, first in estimation-computation and problem solving; Clint Welker, sixth grade, North Elementary, first in estimation-computation and problem solving; Amanda Williams, fifth grade, North Elementary, first in concepts and problem solving, and second in estimation-computation.

Dexter: Shane Noonan, sixth grade, second in estimation-computation.

Patton: Justin Abernathy, fifth grade, Meadow Heights, second in problem solving.

Oak Ridge: Eric Hobeck, fourth grade, first in estimation-computation.

Perryville: Stephanie Klaus, fifth grade, St. Vincent, second in estimation-computation.
