Eighth District Congressman Bill Emerson Wednesday congratulated Southeast Missouri State University and Three Rivers Community College at Poplar Bluff for securing Student Support Services Grants from the U.S. Department of Education.

Southeast's grant was $202,480. It marks the second year funding of a three-year funding cycle. Three Rivers received $195,444.

Emerson said, "If this nation is going to remain competitive worldwide, we absolutely must prepare ourselves -- we must arm ourselves -- with top-notch, well-educated young adults....In this regard, what could be more important than helping those who are at somewhat of a disadvantage to get a first-rate college education?"

The services provided by Student Support Services include: a comprehensive needs assessment and intervention plan; education, career, and personal counseling; transfer assistance; supplemental academic support in reading, writing, study skills, mathematics and other subjects; social and cultural enrichment; acquainting students with available career options; financial aid advisement; a video tape library; and computerized academic support with word processing, tutorials and career guidance system.
