ULLIN, Ill. -- Shawnee Community College's Small Business Development Center will host a "Computer Competency" seminar Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the college campus near Ullin.
The seminar is designed to acquaint participants with various types of computers and software.
Ted Holm, computer instructor and department chairman of the vocational education program at the college, will be instructor for the session, which will include hands-on use of computers and software.
The registration fee is $25 per person, which includes lunch, diskette, and seminar materials.

Volunteers are needed to help people with their income taxes.
More than 1,400 volunteers helped the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs in 1991. The IRS trains volunteers to provide tax assistance free of charge to low income, elderly, disabled and non-English speaking taxpayers.
Volunteers are needed in a number of counties, including Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Dunklin, Mississippi, New Madrid, Pemiscot and Stoddard.

"Tax Preparer," a course designed to acquaint students with individual, partnership, and corporation tax returns, will be offered by the Cape Girardeau Area Vocational-Technical School, 301 N. Clark.
Emphasis in the course will be placed on laws governing the tax practitioner, business deductibles, and nonbusiness deductibles.
"This is a general course for those wishing to learn how to prepare their own taxes as well as individual tax returns for clients," said a school spokesman.
The class will meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and on Jan. 14, 16, 21 and 30.
