YOU KNOW, IT seems a little strange to me, or let's say out of order, to send Dan Quayle to talk to the boys over in Desert Shield. Here was a man who didn't or wouldn't serve his country in time of war. I would think the boys over there would think: Well, we may give our lives over here so that Dan Quayle can become vice president of the country. I can't see this boosting the morale of the soldiers.

I WOULD LIKE to thank the family who lives on Highway 34 for stopping and alerting me to the accident on the bridge in front of their home Saturday afternoon due to the foggy weather. If not for them, there would have been more cars involved and more injuries because visibility was practically zero. By the way, I saw a Woodland school bus loaded with children on their way to a ball game. They call off school because of a predicted earthquake, and yet send a bus load of students out in hazardous, foggy weather to a ball game?

TO KNOW WHAT you know and to know what you don't know is to know.

I WANT TO thank you for having me on Speak Out. I'm doing alright. Thank you.

THANK YOU, TO whoever is responsible for televising the University High Tournament. We really appreciate being able to see it on TV. Thank you, TCI and whoever is responsible.

SOMEBODY WAS referring to a war in Kuwait and asked, if they have one will we have to build their homes back?. Well, if you read between the lines, I saw Charles Karault on television the other night. It shows that they are having meetings. So I'm sure they're agreeing on how many men will get killed and how much we will be building back for them. Bush is a smart man, so he'll know how many men we're going to lose and he'll let them know what all we're going to build back. Thank you for letting me speak out.

YOU KNOW, IT'S the people in this town who come out shopping on days like this that make the rest of us with more sense, who know we should stay home where it's safe, risk our lives to come out so we can have the places open. Thank you, Speak Out.

HELP, HELP, HELP. My electricity if off and my family is microwave dependent.

IN JUST A day or so all the federal employees, the senators the House members and the vice-president, all the way up except President Bush, will receive a hefty pay raise. If these politicians are really concerned with our economy and balancing the budget, the thing for them to do is to reject these pay raises, to show the American people that they are sincere in getting this deficit under control. If I were a politician I could not accept the raise while asking my constituents to tighten their belts. Maybe that's the reason that I'm not a politician, but if I were I would be ashamed to accept a raise and at the same time vote to cut Medicare and Medicaid and all these other social programs. I heard a radio speaker talking the other day about these new taxes that are going into effect. He said it would not help our deficit one bit because this conflict in the Middle East is eating up the money that these cuts and taxes will provide. So we're no better off now than we were before they voted to raise taxes and cut these programs. It is time for the politicians to sit down and get together and run this government the way individuals have to run their households. If I did like these politicians, I would be out on the street homeless. I cannot spend more than I earn, and it should be the same for these people who are running our government. Thank you very much.

I'D LIKE TO thank the Missouri state crew that pulled me out of a ditch on Perryville Road Sunday morning. Thanks a lot, guys, you're a lifesaver.

HELLO, SPEAK OUT. In my Bible I read that the sins of the parents would be visited upon the children. I don't recall reading that the sins of the children would be visited upon the parents. What went wrong? Thank you.

WHY IS IT our weather people in Cape seem to have so much trouble predicting the weather? They try and predict it four days ahead and can't even get it right one. With all those mistakes, if it was on a job like we work on, we'd have been fired long ago. I suppose they'll blame somebody else for their troubles because they say they just read the instruments, but they have their own instruments for recording that too. Thank you.

JUST A TIP for homeowners on these ice-covered sidewalks. If you use your garden fertilizer it helps melt your ice, but it doesn't hurt your grass. In fact, it helps your grass grow. Thank you.

ISN'T THIS SNOW just gorgeous? It must be the biggest snow we've had since the blizzard of 1979. So many people have said that the snow in Colorado is never any prettier than this. It looks just like a postcard. I feel so sorry for friends who are out of town and missing all the beauty and fun.

WHEN OUR TRAINED personnel of the armed forces say we're not ready to go to war they're the ones I believe, not George Bush. George Bush will say anything just like Reagan did, anything that sounds good to please the people. That does not get the job done as far as I'm concerned. That's why we have this mess today.

COULD YOU please give me the Illinois lottery numbers for Saturday, Dec. 1, 1990? Thank you.

The Dec. 2 Illinois Lotto numbers were 8-16-18-29-37-52, the Daily Game numbers were 0-4-4, and the Pick 4 numbers were 2-5-0.

AS A SCOTT City resident we would like to congratulate the mayor, the city council and city employees for the super job they did in clearing city streets to allow residents to get around in our great city. We owe you a round of applause. Thank you.

I READ THURSDAY'S paper. On the front page there was an article about Nancy Cruzan and inside there was a column by Jay Eastlick about the real meaning behind the Nancy Cruzan case. It's been talked about as another freedom-of-choice issue. All I've got to say is I think Jay Eastlick should stop writing for the paper and go to medical school. I would certainly prefer to have him as my doctor or as a hospital administrator than anybody else I've heard comment about the case. Jay Eastlick has really hit the nail on the head when it comes to the bigger issue, which is not the supposed freedom of choice of one woman, whose choices cannot really be known. Nancy Cruzan was a married woman out of the control of her parents when all of this happened. It wasn't about a child whose decisions had to be made for her. We can't continue to live in a society when we pretend everybody can make decisions about themselves and it has no effect on the rest of society. Thank you.

JUST WONDERING WHY I got my Friday paper on Friday and my Thursday paper on Saturday. Was it the weather? Thank you.

We're not aware of any papers having been delivered on Saturday. Because of the weather, some subscribers in outlying areas received their Thursday and Friday papers on Friday.
