Ironic, isn't it, that Commerce, which owes its origins 206 years ago and has prospered because of its proximity to the Mississippi River would someday see the river almost bring about its demise?

The residents who remain are determined to preserve and build on what is left and have formed a Commerce Better Community Club to help attract businesses and new residents. There are possibilities for Commerce, and members of the group realize them. The main part of town is virtually at eye level with the river, and it is that part of town that people have vacated. The hills on its west side provide splendid views of the river, and that is where Commerce's future lies. And a future it has. Commerce, after all, has been flooded and bought out, but it is not about to go away.
