Patriotism is certainly back in vogue. People are proud to be Americans, and they say so. The nation's united support of the troops is inspiring.

Hundreds of Southeast Missourians have bravely answered the call to serve in the military in the Persian Gulf. Those of us at home maintain a constant vigil: We pay tribute to these brave men and women through rallies, programs and patriotic displays; they remain in our daily thoughts.

The war has prompted a spontaneous show of patriotism not seen in many decades.

Residents of Jackson paraded their support of the troops Saturday with a stirring parade and tribute. Perryville also held a rally that day.

This patriotic support is not limited to adults. Our children are also very cognizant of this war. Many of them know a relative or friend of the family directly affected. Our students have hosted rallies in their schools, and have sent letters and treats to the troops by the thousands. For example, area Girl Scouts collected donations to send their special cookies to the troops. The result will be a large shipment in mid-March.

Ironically, this patriotic renewal has created a shortage of flags. America's red-white-and-blue has become scare in all sizes as more people want to display the flag as a symbol of their patriotism. It's a good kind of problem.

The country's endorsement of the troops is more than just "show." It provides a critical message to our troops. Just as we watch the daily updates on the war, the troops watch our reactions through the world media. Our patriotic displays bolster their spirits a half a world away. The mail and messages we send are a breath of fresh air in a dusty desert. The fact that we care and support them makes all the difference.

What makes these displays of patriotism all the more special to the troops is that they are so genuine and spontaneous - flowing straight from our hearts. No one group is orchestrating these rallies or displays; no one person is telling us to wear a yellow ribbon or fly a flag. It's freedom of choice, and we're demonstrating our choice for freedom.

The war may not end quickly. Weeks may dissolve into months. The longer the war lasts, the more critical our support will become. As American troops battle the enemy, they must feel confident about their friends at home. As the war rages, so must our patriotism and support mount. Our rallies and displays will continue to inspire our troops, and send a message of a unity. Our patriotic efforts proclaim to the world that we are truly the United States of America.
