Capitalism is the source of wealth that provides for our needs. For most of us, it provides us with goods that make our lives a little easier plus income for entertainment. Capitalism has came under fire from fascists who say it creates an unequal distribution of wealth. Fascists believe the state should redistribute the wealth created by those with the most talent to those less talented.

Some politicians believe those with the greatest wealth should be taxed at a high rate to provide welfare for the poor. Heavily taxing the wealthiest may provide for welfare needs for a given time, but in the long run new opportunities are the keys to a higher standard of living for all. Welfare hinders future creation of jobs, and minorities are the main victims of heavy taxation.

America has never enjoyed a pure laissez-faire capitalism. We have always had a mixed economy. Many feel government is needed for regulation of the market and protection of companies less able to compete in a fair marketplace. All this regulation has a price, and that price is fewer jobs and higher prices, which is felt heaviest by those on the bottom rung.

Capitalism needs government for protection from fraud and laws to enforce contracts and protection of property rights. But that is where government must end. Americans have always been generous in providing for the needs of those who cannot provide for themselves. They don't need the violence or threat of violence from government to help those in need.
