Tammy Brock, the new coach of the Chaffee girls basketball team, may have no basketball coaching experience, but she certainly has a history of heading up winning programs.

Before coming to Chaffee, Brock took the Woodland volleyball team to the state championships, bringing home a fourth-place finish. Previous to that, Brock was the Leopold volleyball coach for two years, winning districts both years."I haven't coached basketball," said Brock. "I did referee high school basketball, though, and I played varsity ball for Chaffee when I was in high school. I don't know all the little secrets that some of the experienced coaches know, but 10 years of coaching experience has taught me that how you handle the kids is most important."Hoping to improve on last year's 13-15 record, Brock will need all the help her two returning starters from last year's varsity squad can give her.

Amy Burnett, a senior guard/forward and Bridgett Rains, a senior guard, will bring much-needed leadership to a relatively young lineup. Filling out the rest of the varsity lineup will be seniors Casey Hampton (G/F), Angela Holland (F) and Karen Benton (F), junior Morgan Kiefer (G/F) and freshman Jennifer Vandeven (F/C). Jodi Pfefferkorn , a junior guard, will start on the JV squad for experience, but may move up to varsity.

Speed should be the team's strongest attribute, although Brock believes the team is fairly average in height."Basically, our team goal is to have a better season than last year," said Brock. "From a coaching standpoint, I want the girls to play a complete game. Wins and losses don't always measure a team's success. I also don't want them to play defense with just their hands; we can't afford too many fouls."Chaffee's season tips off tonight against Scott City.
