MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Carl Edward Hurst, 83, of Marble Hill died Monday, Aug. 17, 2020, at his home.

Born near Marble Hill on July 16, 1937, he was the son of Homer Edward and Lillie Myrtle Bollinger Hurst.

A 1955 graduate of Lutesville High School, Carl left school to work for Santa Fe Railroad at Kansas City. In 1960, he was drafted into the Army, serving in Fort Rucker, Alabama. Following his discharge in 1962, he married Janet Bullinger on Dec. 22, 1962, in Marble Hill. He returned to work for Santa Fe Railroad, taking college classes at Kansas University at Lawrence, Kansas. He received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1968 and continued with a master's degree. In August 1968, he left the railroad and began his teaching career. He taught with Turner School District in Kansas City, Kansas, became an elementary principal at Meadow Heights School in 1970, and began teaching at Woodland High School in 1971. He retired from teaching at Woodland in May 1996.

He was a founding member and Deacon of Grace Fellowship Family Worship Center. He was a life member of North American Hunting Club and National Rifle Association and a member of American Legion.

He was the proud father of fantastic sons, Clay (Becky), Thor (Mary) and Chad (Amy); proud grandpa of nine super grandchildren, Travis, Holly, Ethan, Nathan, Annie, McKenna, Emma, Hanna and Bristol; and two great-grandchildren, Kayden and Carson. All survive him, along with his wife, Janet.

He is also survived by a sister, Brenda Huff.

Two sisters, Margie Runnels and Helen Matthews, predeceased him.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hutchings Funeral Chapel in Marble Hill.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Grace Fellowship Family Worship Center on Highway 34. Burial will follow in Baker Cemetery near Marble Hill.
