Gusie W. Gockel Jr., 89, of Cape Girardeau passed away Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2020, at Missouri Veterans Home.

He was born July 21, 1931, to Gus and Mary Gockel of Cape Girardeau.

Gus attended College High School and played the trumpet in the band. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Gus served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era and was stationed at Karlsruhe, Germany, where he was a radio operator. While in Germany, Gus met the love of his life, Gisela Militz, and they spent 60 happy years together.

Gus was employed at Marquette Cement plant and Central Foods Corp. and was grounds supervisor at Cape Girardeau County Parks Department. He enjoyed fishing, working in the garden and playing bingo.

Survivors include sons, Jimmy L. Gockel and John T. Gockel of Cape Girardeau; daughters, Ellen Hilleman of Scott City and Nellie McIntryre of Bell City, Missouri; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gisela Gockel, and parents, Gus and Mary Gockel.

A private graveside service, with full military honors, will be held at Cape County Memorial Park.

Ford and Sons Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau is in charge of arrangements.
