Darlene Bonney, 82, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, at the Lutheran Home. She was formerly of Jackson.

Darlene was born Feb. 20, 1938, in New Wells to Leo and Bertha Fiedler. She married Donald L. Bonney on June 8, 1958. He lovingly cared for her until his death March 27, 2009.

She was proud to be a U.S. Air Force wife for 20 years, from June 1956 to July 1976. She worked in banking for many years in addition to her job of raising four children.

Darlene was a stroke survivor for over 22 years. After the stroke that she suffered in 1998, she had to relearn to do many things with the limitation of only using her left hand, including doing counted cross-stitch, a hobby that she was incredibly good at and enjoyed. Her favorite words of strength and inspiration: "To God be the glory."

She was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson, where she served as Sunday school teacher, choir member and in other ministries. In recent years she also became a member at Hanover Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

Loving survivors include a daughter, Cindy (Bob) Lichtenegger of Jackson; three sons, Mark (Merrilee) Bonney of Cape Girardeau; Kevin (Beverly) Bonney of Van Buren, Missouri; and David (Karen) Bonney of San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Leonard (Janet) Fiedler of Jackson; and a sister-in-law, Shirley (Larry) Bock of Jackson.

Also surviving are three granddaughters, Courtney (Alex) Hayden, Kelley (Tyler) Dumey and Cheryl (Nick) Werkmann; two great-granddaughters, Caroline Dumey and Emma Werkmann; two stepgrandsons, Cody (Katie) and Colten Courtney; a great-stepgrandson, Bridger; and great-stepgranddaughter, Cissy.

There will be no public visitation.

A private, immediate family funeral service will be Wednesday, with the Rev. Steven Theiss officiating.

A private burial will follow at Apple Creek Presbyterian Cemetery in Pocahontas.

The family recommends that memorial gifts take the form of contributions to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Lutheran Church or the American Heart Association.

The family would like to thank all of those at the Lutheran Home Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing and Hospice for their care of Darlene during the many years she lived there.

McCombs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
