Wayne Mercer, 82, of Jackson passed away Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021, at Monticello House.
He was born Jan. 7, 1939, in Potosi, Missouri, son of Charles O. and Mildred E. Sparks Mercer.
Wayne was raised in the Potosi area. After school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He worked as a general contractor for several years, including working for McLane Development Co. in Cape Girardeau.
Wayne loved being outside and had many varied interests, as he was an avid hunter, fisherman and enjoyed raising horses.
He was of the Christian faith and being out in God's creation brought him closer to God.
Loving survivors include two children, Sheila Mercer of Cape Girardeau and Eric Mercer of Lake St. Louis, Missouri; his only grandchild, who he adored, Eden; a brother, Merlin (Doris) Mercer of Potosi; and his friend and companion Patricia Meystedt of Collinsville, Illinois.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Mark Wayne Mercer; and seven siblings, Alvin Mercer, Pat Baxter, Geraldine Warden, Doris McLeskey, Dale Mercer, Donald Mercer and Sandra "Sandy" Sue Donley.
A memorial visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to the church or charity of the donor's choice.
