Paul H. Guard III of Cape Girardeau passed away Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022, at Saint Louis University Hospital surrounded by family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born June 23, 1954, to the late Billie I. and Paul H. Guard Jr. in Savanah, Georgia.

Paul was a 1972 graduate of Scott City High School.

He married the love of his life, Shari, and in doing so brought together a small family of four that would see a fifth added shortly after. They would have celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary Dec. 31.

Paul loved the St. Louis Cardinals, genealogy and spending time with friends and family. He was a human calculator who could master about any game as well as play guitar and trace any family's history back hundreds of years. He was "Tiger" to his cousins and family, he was "Love" to Shari, "Paulie" to friends and "Dad" to his children. No matter the name, he was always up for a good chat.

Paul is survived by his wife, Shari; children, Robert and Carrie Guard of Cape Girardeau, Rachel Rumfelt of Scott City and Alex and Jenna Guard of Springfield, Oregon; grandchildren, Morgan Hessenkemper, Annie Jackson, Jude Pearl and Claire Guard; great-grandchild, Allie Wilfawn; brother, Perry (Carol) Guard; and sister, Julie Briney.

Paul will be cremated, and a celebration of life with family will be planned for a later date.
