Christopher Hutson

Christopher L. Hutson, 59, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022, at his home, surrounded by his family and loyal companions, Morley and Phoebe.

He is survived by his wife, Jerra May Hutson; sons, Alec Christopher and Ethan Charles; mother, Judith Hutson; brother, Charles David Hutson; brothers-in-law, Keith (Tammy) May and Jay (Lisa) May; sister-in-law, Vera (Rick) Pobst; three nieces; and two nephews.

Chris was preceded in death by his father, Charles L. Hutson, as well as his in-laws.

Chris was born May 31, 1963, in Cape Girardeau to Judith C. and Charles L. Hutson. He was a graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School as well as Southeast Missouri State University, and was an honored member of Pi Kappa Alpha Brotherhood with his brother and his sons. He and Jerra S. May were married Dec. 11, 1993. They spent 28 amazing years adventuring together, raising a family, establishing their passions and providing a rare example of what true love really embodies.

Chris lived his entire life in Cape Girardeau and was extremely dedicated to the promotion and revitalization of downtown Cape Girardeau. Being the third generation of his family to run Hutson's Fine Furniture, now Hutson's Big Sandy, he was extremely proud that his sons are the fourth generation to continue the family business.

A servant heart is an attribute Chris was well known for. He was honored to serve on the hospital board of SoutheastHEALTH for many years, and was also the current president of Old Town Cape, while also holding previous titles of vice president and secretary. Chris was an Eagle Scout and carried the Scouts' core values of honesty and integrity with him through his entire life. Realizing the impact that achievement had on him, he supported both of his sons as they also achieved this rank within the Boy Scouts of America.

There's no doubt Chris was happiest when he had dirt on his face and mud on his gear. His love for riding brought out the happy, free spirit that defined him. He truly loved his "motorcycle family" and treasured every minute he was riding. Sunday morning trail rides, organized racing events and sharing his love of the sport brought him such joy. He was very proud of his first-place finish in the AMA National Championship and his annual invitation to the Colorado 500.

Chris was a patient teacher and shared his passions of skiing, bicycling, motorcycles, camping and skateboarding with his boys. He was very proud of the role he played in the construction of the City of Cape Girardeau's skate park and even enjoyed skateboarding there himself.

Music played a very important role in his life as he was a great drummer himself. His play list reflected his appreciation of talent, creativity and originality. He loved attending concerts with his family, sharing newly discovered artists, and the special "trip songs" he chose for every vacation or road trip.

Life was truly an adventure for Chris, and he made sure that his family experienced every beautiful minute. His fun, lighthearted spirit will always be reflected in them, as well as all the friends he loved so very much.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau. A celebration of life will begin at 5 p.m.
