Dr. Charles H. Cozean Jr., 86, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, at Life Care Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born May 11, 1936, in Bonne Terre, Missouri, to Charles Hugo and Zelda Martin Cozean. He married Carole Lee Eberhart on Aug. 22, 1959, in Farmington, Missouri.

Cozean graduated from Farmington High School in 1954 and went on to receive a bachelor of science degree from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. He earned his doctor of medicine degree from University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1962. Cozean served in the U.S. Air Force as a captain and chief of ophthalmology at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas. He was honorably discharged in 1968 and returned to Southeast Missouri.

Cozean opened Cozean Eye Clinic in Cape Girardeau in 1968. He practiced ophthalmology for more than 40 years. He was an avid golfer, patron of the arts, member of the Southeast Missouri State University Symphony Board and Cape Girardeau Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, John (Nicole) Cozean of Sikeston, Missouri, and Charles Cozean III of Loveland, Colorado; daughter, Laura (Bart) DeBrock of Vincennes, Indiana; brother, Jon Dennis Cozean of Farmington; two sisters, Nancy Jacob and Josephine (Henry) Styron; and four grandchildren, Jack Cozean of Sikeston, Erica Bunker of Washington, D.C., Dr. William DeBrock of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Victoria DeBrock of Indianapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robin Cozean; and sister, Mary Alexander.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at the funeral home, with the Rev. A.J. Wollenburg officiating. Entombment will be at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum in Cape Girardeau.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Cape Girardeau Lions Club.
