Grant was born Jan. 23, 1934, in Advance, Missouri, to the late John and Maude Sample VanGennip. He and Mary Catherine Gregory were married in 1959, and she preceded him in death in April 2017.

Upon graduation from Advance High School, Grant served two years in the U.S. Army. After his honorable discharge, Grant moved to St. Louis, where he embarked on a long career as a machinist. He loved to hunt, fish and garden.

Grant is survived by his son, Kevin (Tammy) VanGennip of Orange City, Florida; daughter, Stacy (Sean) Skelton of Edwardsville, Illinois; grandchildren, Katie (Mark) Zurline of O'Fallon, Missouri, Kelly VanGennip of Orlando, Florida, Hannah Skelton of St. Louis and Jacob Skelton of Edwardsville; and two great-grandchildren, Lexi and Lani Zurline.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ben, Robert and Paul VanGennip, and two sisters, Rita Shell and Mildred VanGennip

A private graveside service, with full military honors accorded, will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Veterans Home.

McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center assisted with arrangements.
