Jewell Woodrow Mooney, 100, was born Sept. 3, 1922, in Birch Tree, Missouri, and passed away Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was the son of Effie and James Mooney.

Jewell entered the Civilian Conservation Corps when he was 16 years old. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in World War II and Korea. He later obtained his GED and, using the GI bill, attended University of Missouri-Columbia, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in vocational agriculture and later a master's degree.

He taught vocational agriculture for 29 years in Woodland School District in Marble Hill, Missouri. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Marble Hill, where he was a Sunday school teacher for many years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge and Rotary.

He enjoyed horseback riding, turkey and pheasant hunting, and being with his family. He was a great cinnamon roll maker, and he loved taking care of others.

Jewell is survived by his wife of nearly 74 years, Jean Brewer Mooney; daughter, Tami (Rick) Jansen; son-in-law, Alan Drake; four grandsons; one granddaughter; six great-granddaughters; four great-grandsons; two great-great-grandsons; and one great-grandchild on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a niece and his daughter, Teri Drake.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27, at Ford and Liley Funeral Home in Marble Hill, Missouri.

Funeral will follow at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Andrew Green officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be at Bollinger County Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jewell's memory to Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau or to Woodland or Festus, Missouri, Parents as Teachers Programs.
