The oldest pharmacy in Cape Girardeau shut its doors on Wednesday, Sept. 11 after 92 years of serving the community. Broadway Pharmacy, which opened in June 1932, has sold its 710 Broadway retail location.

Customers’ prescription data has been securely transferred to CVS Pharmacy at 2161 William St. in Cape Girardeau.

A post on Facebook shared the owners’ gratitude for their customers and stressed their health and happiness had always been the business’s top priority.

“I know many of you are very sad and upset that Broadway Pharmacy closed. I promise we share these feelings on a deeper level,” owner and lead pharmacist Kevin Wood wrote on social media Friday, Sept. 13. “Is it exactly how we wanted the transition to go, no, but when you sell a business, you don't get to make all the decisions.”

Wood described losing money on 37 of the first 50 prescriptions filled and called it an unsustainable system. He said anyone who needs help during the transition could message Broadway Pharmacy on Facebook for assistance. A call to Broadway Pharmacy recommended inquiries be sent to the William Street CVS Pharmacy.

The business will continue with its Broadway LTC Pharmacy servicing nursing homes and assisted living residents.
