Giants assume lead in wild card chase

DENVER -- Jeff Kent homered and drove in three runs and the San Francisco Giants, with Barry Bonds going homerless for the second straight game in hitter-friendly Coors Field, beat Colorado 7-3 on Saturday.

The Giants moved past Los Angeles and back into the NL wild card lead by a half-game.

Bonds, who leads the majors with 60 homers, went 1-for-5 with a single. Bonds struck out on a 3-2 changeup from rookie Jason Jennings (3-1) in the first, singled in the third and grounded out in the fifth.

With 19 games remaining, Bonds needs 10 homers to tie the major-league record of 70 set by Mark McGwire in 1998.

BRAVES 5, CUBS 3

CHICAGO -- Tom Glavine (14-7) allowed four hits before leaving in the sixth inning with a blister and Chipper Jones hit his 35th homer as Atlanta beat fading Chicago.

The Cubs lost their fourth straight and fell six games behind Houston -- which later played Milwaukee --in the NL Central. Chicago also trails the Giants by a game in the wild card.

DIAMONDBACKS 8, PADRES 6

PHOENIX -- Trevor Hoffman blew a save for the first time in 27 tries and Matt Williams hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning for Arizona.

Steve Finley homered twice, including a game-tying shot off Hoffman in the ninth inning.

PHILLIES 6, EXPOS 0

MONTREAL -- Randy Wolf pitched a six-hitter for his first career shutout as Philadelphia won for just the third time in 11 games.

Jimmy Rollins had his fourth four-hit game of the season, including his third homer leading off a game this season, to tie his career best.
